How can Carolyn's dad be black?

She does not remotely look mixed. I'm confused.

Considering that Jennifer Beals is bi-racial, with her father being African American, it would be unfitting to cast two white actors/actresses to play her parents. I don't know about you, but she looks very mixed to me, have you never seen Flashdance?

reply

Jennifer Beals is still one hit lady.

reply

Jennifer's father is black? Welp, she doesn't look like she has any visual signs of her father's side.

My niece's mulata though that's because her father's too and the grand father was an Native-Indian (or if you prefer, Native-American). He's long gone now but despite that I'd like to see a photo of him.

I've always fancied meeting a Native-Indian so I kinda did though on the outside she's just like any other kid (watches stupid YouTube videos and stuff).

To be honest I thought the same thing. I didn't even know she was bi-racial. Jennifer Beals is light skinned for someone who is mixed so her father is probably lighter skinned than the actor they had playing her father. But of course with genetics you never really know.

Mr. Grady, you were the caretaker here.

In this article, there's a photo of her parents. I think she looks a lot like her dad.

I've seen a story about biracial twins - fraternal, not identical - where one looked white and the other black, which you can imagine subjected the parents to all kinds of obtrusive comments. Genetics is a quirky thing.

I love the fact that the show just presented it without commenting or "explaining" anything while making clear she was not adopted.

People are always commenting on how my nephew looks exactly like my sister - and he WAS adopted.

It's sad that white supremacy has screwed up humanity. But everyone is black or hue (different colors with main shade as dark ) man. Whites are just bleached blacks who have recessive genes and look lighter because they moved away from the equator ( effected their skin more negatively) to cold regions and stayed in caves. They consistently intermingled with other bleached blacks so the whiteness stuck.

Scientists around the world are confirming this fact and now revealing that blacks who look blue black both parents with no mixture of white race anywhere have been having blue eyed, blonde haired and red haired looking children while the rest of the family looks blue black in Africa. And they don't look like albino blacks with the kinky hair no this the blonde flowing kind of hair and red hair and brunette hair.
It's some kind of mutation. The whites couldn't take the African heat and started to become one as a group and created their own family ties.

reply

Scientist acknowledge that the scientific community has actually been knowing this fact for years. They just never wanted to admit it. But all whites come from the black race.

reply

Actually her dad looked a lot like Joe Morton (her boss on the show) but with more hair. It'd hard to find a good picture because he died 41 years ago.

I though the same thing. I am not familiar with the actress, but she looks lily-white to me in the show. In this photo, though, she looks biracial:

I was confused until I came here and found out that she actually is biracial.

I never thought one way or the other about it until this past episode aired. She could just as easily pass for a number of heritages. I actually always thought she was Italian.

I'm glad they did this episode, because it made me learn more about her outside of acting. I never knew anything about her let alone how smart and accomplished she is. What a class act and love how she was so honest about Flashdance using a another dancer, in place of her, even though that was supposed to be kept secret. Even at nineteen she showed a lot of integrity.

Even on the heels of absolute fame she decided to finish out school, instead of striking while the iron's hot. She graduated from Yale with honors for God's sake--that's pretty amazing.

Like I said, I'm really glad they ran that episode or I would've never looked her biography up. I never saw Flashdance or anything else she was in. I've heard her name but that was it. She must've had amazing parents, because they sure produced some self-assured, and smart, amazing kids.

Also, I'm glad they didn't kill her father off on the series. I was so afraid they were going to do that. I really like her parents and hope they use more of them in the episodes.

I was equally surprised when a black actor played Meghan Markle's (Rachel's) father on Suits. But now I can see it.

Same here. After we saw her father, I started paying more attention to her closeups, and thought "Yeah, maybe." But wasn't concerned enough about it to look up the actress's actual heritage.

Bi-racial people don't always looked mixed. Example: Gabrielle Reece or Rashida Jones

reply

Rashida Jones looks black to me. When I looked at Gabrielle Reece I thought "White Person", when I first saw Rashida Jones I thought "Person of color" (Black or Latin or Mixed)

reply

Rashida Jones looks biracial. Actually, when I first saw her I thought she looked like a black Peggy Lipton (her mother). Her features are almost identical to her mother but she has a slightly darker skin tone and dark hair.

I never knew Gabrielle Reece was biracial. From her quote on IMDb she must not have a very good relationship with her mother and her father died when she was young so I was not able to find much in the way of photos of her parents. It is just my idle curiosity that makes me want to see photos of the parents.

reply

She totally looks mixed. You must not know many mixed people. I know mixed people that look much more white than she does. She actually looks very biracial. Always has.

reply

I'm surprised that all these people are surprised. I could always tell even all the way back to Flash Dance. Regardless she has great genes. She's the best looking 52 year old woman I can think of. When I see her playing parts like this or as the head of the Chicago PD, my first thought is she looks to young. I have to remind myself that she's even older than me.

And this is exactly what I was referring to when I said that the writers of the show made her ethnicity a prop when it was convenient for the show and not a part of the character's identity. The fact that people are astounded that she's biracial proves that they are not treating her character as a biracial woman but rather they have written her as a white woman with a black father.

We must excel, not just exist.

reply

I think the fact that people are astounded that she's biracial proves that many believe that biracial people are only allowed to look a certain way. Genes are unpredictable. You could have 10 people, each with a white and a black parent, and all 10 could appear ethnically different (some could appear to be Turkish, Latin, Italian, straight-up white or possess the quintessential 'mixed' look).

Some biracial folks, like Rachel True, appear black in appearance. http://thecraft.wikia.com/wiki/Rachel_True

People can't help which side of the genetic pool their appearance takes after. From a casting P.O.V, perhaps they decided on Jennifer Beals because she was the most qualified actress for the role, and not because they were trying to hoodwink the audience/use her background as a prop.

Did you guys know that Jennifer Beals has been obsessed with the concept of life after death for decades, even before her father died (when she was ten years old? They probably cast her due to her profound interest and knowledge on the subject.

And before anyone accuses me of being 'naive' or 'ignorant' to the trials and tribulations that people of color face, let me state, for the record, that I'm a black female :-).

And on that note, I'm out. Let's all try to just enjoy the damn show for what it is: entertainment.
