What makes Salman Khan so popular?

I think it's his killer personality and murderous presence that mows you down forcibly, even when your eyes are closed.

It's actually Wanted which turned the tide for Salman, though Dabangg is considered the bigger hit n true comeback. Dabangg was actually Wanted repackaged for family audiences with humour n romance, shorter runtime edited by Salman himself.
Don't know why but Wanted got A rating by Censor Board, thus restricting its audience but nothing stopped making Salman the man of the masses. Wanted multiplied his fan following.
