To see Peepers give his life to such terrible people and to think of all the horror Blanche goes through (abducted sister, can't ever become a princess, etc), sometimes I just don't know how to take this show

It's a spoof on the cruelty of how things really were. Real life for poorer people back then was crueler than this show actually portrays. My great-great Grandmother would tell me stories when I was a kid about what it was like in the late 1800's and early 1900's. This show takes place in a time before people really had real rights and protections equally under the law.
