Christian propaganda.

Shows like this are focused at three groups:

Christians, who will tune in for Jesus, especially a Jesus that they can relate to.

Former Christians, to make them think that maybe Jesus is cool or feel guilt or something.

People who were never Christian, so that they might possibly consider it as a possibly.

I'm Atheist and don't believe in Jesus, but I enjoy the show for what it is. Much like how I don't believe in vampires or zombies, but I just suspend disbelief for a while and enjoy some of those projects that deal with the subject matter.

I watch Black Jesus for the ridiculous set up because I find it hysterical. The dialogue where people as well as Jesus are talking biblical subject matter, but adding in urban slang and whatnot. Then there are a ton of things said with situations going on in the show.

It's played so casual that if you are 1/2 ass watching, you zone out and miss the actual joke. They don't play it up like it's some sort of "Scary Movie" comedy where they are over the top and pause for a moment so they can, in some cases, literally spell out the joke.

Black Jesus has a strength where every scene and character has a moment. Not just the ones making Jesus jokes and references.

The conversations between Charlie Murphy and John Witherspoon are great! Jesus' group just hanging out doing nothing has several great lines going on.

Long story short, there are SEVERAL reasons for people to like and watch this show, not just religious people. Because TRUE religious people will take MAJOR offense to a show where Jesus is smoking weed and calling people the "N" word. Not to mention the freak out that many would have on the mere CONCEPT of their lord and savior NOT being white.

As a Christian, I don't care at all what Christ's race is and most Christians would agree. He was obviously middle Eastern.

reply

He is a Jew. Good grief, the ignorance.

reply

He's a fictional character based on other myths. You can rewrite him however you wish.

There is no major disagreement that he was ethnically Middle Eastern-Jewish. Though some question what exactly that looked like at that time, there is a general scholarly consensus that first century Jews from Judea were Levantine Middle Easterners.

Of course it's entertaining. Good propaganda makes you think that you're being entertained rather than brainwashed.

You seem like an incredibly weak minded person. I for one have no problem whatsoever being entertained whilst still having my critical thinking intact.

Why? Because i can separate between fiction and non-fiction. And liking the show or the character Black Jesus doesnt in any way change my beliefs regarding "actual" Jesus.

reply

Do you have a source to confirm that?

"That's like putting your whole mouth right in The Dip!" - Seinfeld

reply

Try reading a book. Perhaps the bible. 'Cuz that would atleast be one book you've read so far.

reply

And how did you figure this out? Do you have anything to back your conclusions?

reply

I said it first, so I would be the source. The evidence for the source would be the show itself.

Treating IMDb like Wikipedia is pretty obnoxious, as it's for a discussion rather than an article. You obviously want a debate-style discussion, but when your only argument is a demand for sources, it seems like you already lost the debate. A better way to challenge me would be to find just one scene in the whole show that doesn't fall into one of the three categories mentioned.

No. A better way would be for you to either cite sources or actually make any kind of argument whatsoever. You're just making claims one shouldnt take more seriously than if i claimed it was propaganda for our alien overlords.

Argument 1) Not every positive depiction of something is propaganda.

Argument 2) Many christians wouldnt really like the notion of Jesus being a stoner.

Argument 3) Why would Aaron McGruder suddenly try to make everyone a christian?

reply

Meh... go read a book... and not the bible!

So, that's the level of debate you're capable of? Pro-tip: Don't go around implying that people are brainwashed when it's you who's the intellectually inferior.

reply

No, seriously, go read something because I'm not going to explain everything to you because you're not going to listen anyway. All these questions that you have... Google it! You want to fight and feel superior, so I'm not going to waste my time.

reply

Google what? "Christian propaganda"? "Why Black Jesus is christian propaganda"?

Do you have A SINGLE ARGUMENT for your opinions regarding Black Jesus? Like seriously, any whatsoever?

Obviously it's you who are the brainwashed one. Goddamn sheeple.

reply

I'M OBVIOUSLY THE BRAINWASHED ONE?

Do you have a source to back that up?

Know what I think?

You need to get right with your God.

I say this because something has obviously transpired between you and your God to make you obsess on demonstrating contempt and hatred in this way. If you honestly didn't believe in God, none of this would be an issue and you wouldn't have posted this thread. You certainly wouldn't be so obsessed with your contempt to reply on every comment the way you're doing.

So you need to go back to the root of the problem... maybe you feel like God let you down? Maybe someone you trusted did you wrong in the name of God and you blame God for that? Maybe someone condemned you or judged you for something in the name of God and you think God is responsible for that? I don't know what it is... you know, it's all in your heart.

But as Black Jesus told Vic, you gotta let that sh!t go baby, you gonna bust a blood vessel or something.

reply

I'm right with "my" God, I just have a problem with Christianity and there is a big difference between the two.

Just enjoy the show or don't, but this bickering is rather unnecessary like users making valid complaints against Season 2. Religions shouldn't even be taken seriously but unfortunately they are.
