You know, Im really finding this quite fascinating. Naturally this opening installment has to be more about introducing and establishing the characters rather then plot and Shearsmith (as in The Widower) is a revelation after only seeing him in comedic performances. Hes made his character fascinating to watch, and isnt overplaying it, simply letting the aloof/disconnected natured of the DI and the writing work its magic. Too early to tell if plotwise this will be a winner but I think its very obvious that casting Reece was a great move, hes one talented guy. I know it sounds daft...and Im just throwing this up for lighthearted debate but can you imagine an episode where his character gets to work with his pal Steve Pembertons character from Whitechapel, hmmm nice!

reply

Yes I'm sure he does have aspergas, I'm sure the writer watched The Bridge and liked Saga's character and decided to copy it

reply

He's like Sherlock.

reply

Absolutely. Writer intends him to have Apergers. Some people with Aspergers are brilliant in a particular area, can be high functioning, but will still have problems with communicating with others, picking up on their cues, reading social signals--body language, voice inflection and tone. They will benefit from coaching in this area. His assistant has taken on that job it seems. He's not intended to be just "a weirdo." Problem is the people around him do not know about his disorder.
