People tune in to watch Joel and Ellie, not an entire subplot barely relating to the plot. 1+ hours of their backstory was a bit much given the end goal was to get their truck. Make this into a hetero dynamic and I'm sure people wouldn't have a problem calling this episode out for the nothin burger it was.

I think the issue is that people are missing the distinction between what a "homophobe" is and the difference between that and a person who just prefers some other sort of depiction in their choices.
In hindsight, I should have made it more clear that I was pointing out that the "homophobes" were going to have a field day with this episode.
Still, if someone is offended by this mild portrayal of homosexuality and screams about it, I would suggest he or she does have some aspect of homophobia.
Define progress. It's subjective as those progressives don't believe in God. So they become their own gods and progress becomes meaningless.
