Why are they not rich?

Isn't this the type of British show where the main characters would be filthy rich and living in a stately home? I'm not saying that they need to be rich I'm just curious why the producers made them pleasantly middle class? Any word on why the class change?

I'm black, gay, and a nerd; just staying alive is an act of protest.

reply

The are not rich in the book.

reply

If my memory serves me correctly they were part of the upper middle class that revolved around the upper class. The old TV show made them out to be wealth.

reply

In the first book, The Secret Adversary, they start by being utterly broke, unemployed, she the daughter of a clergyman (with several sisters I think), he the nephew and presumptive heir of a wealthy, maybe aristocratic man, and as they're young and not really the type to worry they decide to start their own business together, as private investigators and adventurers. Afterwards, Tommy is offered a good and well-paid situation in the secret services and they can live very comfortably. But they never were filthy rich, born-and-raised-in-a-castle people. Not sure if there's really a class change between the book and this version.

reply

that part isn't changed. in the original stories Tommy and Tuppence are not rich and they are middle class. in fact, none of Agatha christie's detectives are rich. Poirot is firmly middle class and bourgeois, Miss marple is genteel but not rich, she clearly has to be careful with money. superintendant Battle is solidly middle class. the only really posh christie detective I can think of is lady Frances Derwent in why Didn't They ask Evans?

reply

Why not make a new series centering around Superintendant Battle?

reply

that would be great. He's a really good character, I always wished Christie had written more stories about him.

reply

I would love to see a series with Battle as the lead character. Delightful. We've had Poirot / Marple / Berefords so why not make a series about Christie's other detective Battle. It's never been done before so it would be interesting and something new

reply

Yeah, and maybe also a Harley Quin series.

reply

I've never actually read the Harley Quin stories, but I do obviously know of them. And I remember reading somewhere that Satterthwaite and Harley Quin were Agatha Christie's own favourite characters, which is why I had always intended to read them, albeit never did. I am quite seriously surprised they haven't been adapted for television before, though. Perhaps that's because there's a mystical element to them as well, which wasn't thought to mix so well with the traditional mystery. But yes, I think attention to those characters is overdue too.

reply

Do read it. I had never heard of those A.C characters before I picked up the book. They are now my absolute favorites!!
