Review: LA TIMES - I've never read a worse movie review

Here:

Quotes:

"What "Not Cool" really is, though, is an abyss, an insult to the craft of filmmaking, storytelling and entertainment in almost every way"

"When it's not built around mean-spirited, revolting jokes about anybody who isn't Dawson's color, attractiveness level, size and gender — the genitalia-exposing, feces-eating homeless black man is simply jaw-dropping — it's a dreary, all-screaming pity party about thoroughly unappealing individuals."

Wow, that is easily the harshest review I've ever seen from the LA Times, and honestly it indicates that everything I suspected about Shane from his appallingly immature and clueless behavior on The Chair is true and not a "trick" of the editing. Shane kept worrying that they were making him look bad. He did that all by himself.

Why in the hell did this show feature this guy? It is baffling.

reply

Yep... Shane Dawson is clearly out of his depths and knows very little about film in general.
But it's obvious why he was picked.
They picked him because of the numbers. He has millions of fans on YOUTUBE and the producers of the show and this film are hoping those millions of fans will translate to box office numbers and TV ratings.
Talent seemed to be the least of their interests.

reply

I agree with you on the reason why they choose him. However, there is an article from Variety where Chris Moore says some things about Shane and his movie that are seriously baffling...

http://variety.com/2014/scene/news/shane-dawson-movie-not-cool-the-chair-1201309067/

Chris Moore:

“I think that ‘Not Cool’ is something that’s going to define a generation, in a way,” he said. “Shane sort of represents that generation in his age and his style in coming up through the YouTube ranks.”

“The next time I get introduced, it won’t be ‘Good Will Hunting’ and ‘American Pie,’” he added. “It’ll be ‘Not Cool’ and ‘Hollidaysburg’ and ‘Chair,’ hopefully.”

Define a generation? Although it's hard to believe he could be that clueless, I actually think Moore believes it.

Also in that article, Shane goes on and on about how people are going to be shocked about how much "heart" there is in his movie.

These people are delusional.

reply

I would expect Shane Dawson to be narcissitic and delusional about his own level of talent. But to hear Mr. Moore's statements about this dreck defining a generation, more specifically the generation I belong to, is nauseatingly insulting. He produced Good Will Hunting... what the hell happened to him? If he has any sense at all, he'll continue to introduce himself as the producer of Good Will Hunting and try to downplay his involvement in this cinematic abortion. There are people from this generation who have the potential to tell real stories and I wish Mr. Moore would pay more attention to them rather than Shane "My audience is young teenage girls" Dawson.

And that review is the greatest thing I've ever read.

Amen brother.

The NY Times review isn't quite as scathing, but they seem equally unimpressed...

Having seen Not Cool. It is just truly awful being all belief. There's a reason Dawson was making YouTube videos and not actual films to start with. But I suppose you can't blame him as much as you can the script. It's like a 12 year old wrote it and put filthy and raunchy stuff they thought was funny.

The main problem with the script it felt like it was catering towards young adults, but the film is Hard R comedy, and most of Dawson's fans. Which no doubt are 11 year old girls can't see it. Another thing is they full on raunchy for like 60 some minutes and suddenly try yo get all dramatic and sappy. Which doesn't work what they established for the better part of the movie. It just felt like they were trying way too hard.

Also if Dawson would have been smart he'd cast a actor, and not himself. But since he's a egomaniac he plays one of the leads. Plus cross-dresses as a blonde ditz with the mouth of a sailor. Meaning every word that character says is a filthy swear word.

Something else. You would have thought the producers would have picked a better script. Most of the dialogue in this was just beyond awful. I'm sure there were way better scripts out there. I mean how many favors did that writer do for the producers for the mto pick his script?

reply

Dawson rewrote some of the script so that also falls squarely on his head.

Amen again.

I think Moore's been dropped on his head once too often!

Thankfully, Affleck and Damon are bringing back "Project Greenlight." Hopefully, those running the new season of that show will be much more serious about finding good directors than Moore was on "The Chair!"

He gives youtubers such a bad name. There are plenty that are genuinely funny and fun to watch, but Shane Dawson is one of the worst "popular" youtubers out there. I can't believe he has as many subscribers as he does.

Totally accurate summary.
