Perhaps I am dumb, but the ending...

The re-enactment of the screams - was that supposed to be an experiment to see if people could hear the screams and would respond? Or were the neighbors forewarned that a re-enactment was taking place? Or was it just for catharsis and dramatic effect?

The sign he posted was not specific, so I am not convinced the neighbors deliberately stayed out of the way of the filming. But he also didn't offer any follow up commentary on the fact that no one could hear or would help. Was that the assumed conclusion, or am I reading in too much?

I'm assuming the signs let everyone know what was going on. In spite of that, I fully expected SOMEONE to respond - look out a window, lights to come on, calls to be made (38, to be exact).

Since he didn't receive a face to face explanation (from the killer) or the closure he sought for, I believe the reenactment gave him a little of this.

I believe the re-enactment also demonstrated that the neighbours may have heard more than they cared to admit to the detectives.

I also read somewhere, I believe Bill pointed it out, that apartments did not have individual thermostats back then. So, if your apartment was over heated, the only solution was to open the windows. Also, that the windows back then tended to be thinner than they are now.
