Casting

What do you think of the casting? I think Chancellor and Richardson are inspired casting! Both are superb actresses gifted at comedy. I know they'll be great. I'm not really familiar with Pemberton's work.

reply

Not a big fan of Chancellor but I think she'll be good as Lucia and I love Richardson in anything.

Pemberton's snaffled himself the plum part of Georgie:

Thanks for the link! I actually agree about Chancellor (she'll always be Duckface in our house, lol), but she is a v. good actress and I enjoyed her performance opposite Toby Stephens in NTL's filmed stage version of Noel Coward's Private Lives. So I agree she can pull off Lucia very well.

Thrilled they've cast Felicity Montagu as Diva. Curious about the casting of Gemma Whelan as Quaint Irene. (Is she being associated with mannish female characters due to her portrayal of Yara Greyoy in Game of Thrones?)

reply

Yes, thanks also for the link. There's a number of accomplished actors so it looks to be a promising cast. I note that Poppy Miller is playing Evie Bartlett, a character that was missing from the 1980's TV series. Quite often re-makes are dissapointing when compared to the original but this is a series I'm quite looking forward too.

I also see that they are going to film it in Rye again and it will be interesting to see if they are using the same properties for the outdoor scenes and if there are any noticable changes to the town.

I don’t watch Games of Thrones so don’t know that actress but I’m pleased with who’s been cast (apart from Katy Brand, who I find very unappealing in more ways than one). Nice to see some relative unknowns among the usual (mostly very talented) suspects.

reply

They'll both do well, but I am surprised they weren't cast the other way around.

I thought that at first, too, as I could easily see Richardson playing an excellent Lucia (and even prefer her to Chancellor), but I just couldn't picture Chancellor as Miss Mapp!

I thought the same thing. Miranda is very versatile, isn't she?

Pemberton and Gatiss were part of the brilliant trio that did "The League of Gentlemen" series. Pemberton was also memorable recently in Happy Valley. Gatiss is best known as Mycroft Holmes and for his brilliant writing efforts there and with the Dr Who revival.

i can see miranda richardson playing most characters on the show to be honest, she is very versatile. i think she was brilliant as miss mapp, her expressions and mannerisms reminded me of haycinth bucket from keeping up appearances

I agree, Richardson was brilliant as Miss Mapp. I loved the little sidling walk she would do, when Mapp would insinuate herself into groups or conversations laden down with her basket, and that pained smile of hers. Chancellor was great too - the role of Lucia suited her down to the ground.

I found myself missing a bit of Lucia's eccentricity from Chancellor. A very assured performance, but not a stretch for her. Richardson though was typically invested and inventive as Mapp, such a brilliant character actress doing the source material (and Prunella Scales) proud in my book.
