Surprised how much I liked this

I'm in the US, and had to wait a while for the UK DVDs to be delivered, so I just got around to watching this.

As a big fan of the original 1985 series (which nothing will ever replace in my affection), I’m surprised how much I enjoyed this, especially episodes 1 and 3 (2 fell a bit flat for me). Excellent cast that somewhat underplays compared to the more over-the-top (but very funny) performances in the earlier version. Beautiful production design, too. And I was especially glad to see Hermy, Ursy and Evie, none of whom appeared in ’85. Poppy Miller’s Evie Bartlett was spot on, a highlight of the series.

I also liked that there were some moments that were really very touching when you realized that Mapp was actually hurt by her friends apparently deserting her for Lucia. In ’85, Prunella Scales’ Miss Mapp was angry and frustrated to the point of hilariously sputtering incoherence. Richardson brought a different texture and human depth to a comic role. Interesting to see how two excellent actresses approach the same character.

My major complaint is that the three hours seemed rushed. I didn’t mind that events were moved around (e.g., in the books, Guruism was in the first book, in which Mapp didn’t appear at all), but somehow the episodes didn’t have time to breathe.

I hope that viewers will look up the wonderful 1985 series as a complement to this one, and that the books might find a new readership.

Great post; I echo everything you wrote.

Miranda Richardson is matchless, to my mind. She can do *anything*. I'm now watching or rewatching various productions she appears in. I'm sure you've seen Enchanted April, but in case you haven't, I strongly recommend it.

Also, I assume that you saw Cranford when it aired, but just in case... Another amazing adaptation -- well-written, great production values, superb cast.

Best wishes.

I also enjoyed this, the more so after looking at just a little of the 1985 version, which is on Youtube. I may plunge in and watch all of 1985 version after completing the whirlwind tour that was this recent 3-episode version. I found many laughs, some pain, and uniformly wonderful actors who were a joy to watch. Being American, Mapp and Lucia was new to me and I'm glad to have found it.

I've never seen the original or read the books but I loved this mini-series. There are so many hilarious moments and I can't remember the last time I cried tears of laughter. Seriously, Miranda Richardson's line delivery had me wheezing. The whole cast is brilliant, but she especially stands out. One moment I'd hate Mapp, the next I'd feel such sympathy and love for her.

Although each episode is quite full in terms of plot, I felt it was effective because it kept me entertained and listening closely the entire time. Perhaps I'll go read the books now; the ingenious screenplay has me curious what the source material is like.
