Sexuality a trifle on the nose

In the superlative LWT/Channel 4 production from the mid 80s, the sexuality of Georgie and Quaint Irene is alluded to but only of any prominence once Georgie and Lucia announce their marriage - the separate rooms, and QI throwing a wobbly. However, in this new BBC version, it's front and centre from the off: Major Benjy making noises and barbed remarks at Georgie, and Quaint Irene making puppy-dog eyes at Lucia. I feel it somehow diminishes the drama...it's all so obvious.
