One question about the movie...

Just finished the film and it was ok. Definitely had some thrilling moments although after the reveal, I felt there wasn't enough answered.

Why was the guy about to commit suicide? If he did that would have ruined everything for them. I know the point is he's crazy but they were both sane enough to be plotting on the kids. Just didn't get the significance of that scene.

I took it to mean he was rehearsing

He was the saner of the two, it seemed, and he knew the weekend would have to end with "Nana" killing the kids, like she killed her own kids. Then he'd kill her and himself to end their "perfect weekend."
