Gratitude

My thanks to all involved in this lyrical film that conveys the beauty and ugliness, the rich heritage and the cultural morass of this place, all without reducing the people to simple stereotypes, whether positive or negative. It struck me as a film of love without condescension.

It's very slow and light on plot, so it's not for everyone, but I wondered how this movie went over with people in and around Pine Ridge.

I read an interview with the director, Chloe Zhao, and she said when she screened it for the people of Pine Ridge they had a very positive reaction.

I agree about the non-condescension, if you read interviews with the director she moved to (or near I forget) Pine Ridge and stayed there for 5 years trying to get the movie made and a lot of the cast were non-actors who were local residents.
