Based on the novel, The Dinner by Herman Koch

This was one of my favorite recent novels. In the novel the people are upper crust Icelanders. I pictured them quite differently than the Italians. The novel has beautiful descriptions of the restaurant and it's menus, and concerns itself mainly with social status. The crime committed by the son is not disclosed until far into the story.

I was delighted to see this on Netflix and quite enjoyed the film version.

Icelanders? I have read the book, they are most definitely Dutch. The novel was Dutch too, as is the author. Is the book localized when it is translated?

reply

Thanks for correcting me. I remembered it wrong. What did you think of the film?

reply

I turned off the Dutch film after only 10 minutes, and haven't even given this one a chance yet, to be honest. But, I actually gave up on the book after four pages too, tried it again months later and finished it then. So maybe I should watch both. I did not even know about this version until yesterday when I read the American version was going ahead. I read the Dutch film changed the narrator to an everyday man, from the sociopath he clearly is in the book. How is that in this film? Is it an adaptation of the book, or a remake of the film?

reply

It only keeps the general plot of the book. The book was much more about the parents than the children, whom I remember as being in their 20's rather than high school students. Now I want to see the Dutch film.

reply

They are now making an American version which looks like it will be truer to the book. It's listed in IMDB. It will star Richard Gere and Laura Linley.

Yeah I heard about it yesterday. The book was really good, after I gave it its second chance. Btw, it was really hard to read the book for me, because I only knew Herman Koch as the blonde guy with the glasses in this old TV show. Watch a few seconds and see how serious you can take him as an author...
