Children immune to the virus?

It's not clearly said, but the ending, where there are only children survivors, seem to imply that they are immune to the virus.

But they all appeared also to be mute, unable to talk. Not explained though.

If they were not immune, but just given the vaccine, it was probably because they cannot talk and tell others what happened.

Children are to be seen and not heard.
