Trapped=Fortitude?

It's obviously not a coincidence that the plots and basic relative locations are very, very similar. So I'm interested to know how this came about if anyone knows anything about either of the shows creation and relation to each other. Anyone have any details?

BTW this show is very good, I also enjoyed Fortitude very much. Trapped is more authentic I suppose as the local matches the language and the subtitles are just fine.

The only resemblance to me is a brutal death, cold atmosphere, small town, similar landscape. The character build-ups are different, the storyline also, even though I can see similarities, and that is based on the whole series, since I've seen all 10 episodes, no weird ending here like in Fortitude, more real.

Fortitude got a little crazy towards the end and SPOILER ALERT: everyone was basically dead at the end of the season, I have no clue what they are gonna do for it's second season(apparently it looks to be set to air later this year.

As for this, I doubt you'll continue to watch if Fortitude didn't make the cut. It's pretty much the same plot, setting and chock full of evil people masquerading as politicians and business owners, maybe a cop. Lots of mystery, still waiting for the last 4 episodes.

Fortitude is very good, but it is more slow moving, but also a more complex and interesting plot. You might give it another chance

I had assumed it was a coincidence. Although they look superficially similar they are chalk and cheese for me. There are things I liked in Fortitude, e.g. Micheal Gambon's performance and some of speeches of Stanly Tucci. They must have felt lucky to get these two great actors because, I'm sure without these two I would have most probably stopped watching.

Trapped, on the other hand, is real TV gem, the like of which are very rare. There are so many great things to say about it. One of the reviews here claim that although it is great, everything that appears has done before. Well, I don't watch TV much for exactly this reason; however, in this case I have exactly the opposite opinion. This is one of the least derivative TV dramas I have ever seen.

MINI SPOILER

A tiny example is the hero's eight year old daughter who cruelly taunts a young boy her age with lines like: "You don't have a daddy, but I have, and he is also the chief of police, so there!" It not that she is a cruel child or even a particularly bad one. She is also, obviously, not going to turn out to be latest manifestation of the antichrist (thank god). She is simply a perfectly normal eight year child. The shocking thing here is to realize that we so rarely see child characters written this well. Better still, many of the little eccentric details like this fit together in many very clever and subtle ways. It is like looking inside a finely-crafted Swiss watch.

There are of course some big differences(The cruiseliner, human trafficking, the lack of the mammoth, lol, but there are also many, many similarities. I would like write a post of them and "map out" the actual character connections just up to the end of the 6th episode where I am currently, but unfortunately I feel a bit ill atm, but I will.

I love this show, I enjoyed Fortitude but it didn't turn out pleasingly imo(all of the really great characters in it died or certainly appeared to be dead at the end). I have episode 7 and 8 to watch today for Trapped and can't wait to see how it all turns out in the end. Sucks that this is only a 10 episode run and done, at least that is what I read.

lack of the mammoth
😃

If you get your analysts done, I'd very much like to read it. I'm sure you will enjoy 7 and 8, it just gets better and better, which is what I hope will be your fate to.

Just watched them and wow what a cliffhanger, I can't wait to see how Andri goes about that confrontation concerning the padlock key.

Both shows are great. I just wanted to point out another interesting similarity I noticed. Fortitude the mayor is trying to build an Ice Hotel on the land. In Trapped the mayor is trying to build a new port. I haven't finished Trapped yet but it might even surpass Fortitude if it nails the ending. I agree Fortitude went off the rails at the end but it was still really good.

Fortitude was a mystery/thriller that morphed into something that was almost SyFy. Trapped stays in the mystery/thriller genre. Both are really good.

I think any of these mystery/thrillers that tell one story set in a specific singular location are going to have some similarities. Top of the Lake, Broadchurch, The Returned, Fortitude, Trapped etc. There are upcoming series as well. Midnight Sun (Sweden/France) Article circle in Sweden, Bordertown (Finland) bordertown near Russia, and The Kettering Incident (Australia) Tasmania set mystery, to name 3 that premiered at Series Mania. I agree that the location of Trapped and Fortitude are very similar, I don't agree that the plots are very similar.

reply

Yes it turned out to be much different in many ways, at the time I had posted I had just recently watched Fortitude and shortly after watched the first episode of Trapped and saw a lot of similarities that of course totally dissolved as Trapped progressed, very much it's own thing. I really enjoy shows that take place in specific areas where the location is in itself it's own character, there's no greater place for a murder mystery to unfold than in a small snowed in remote location, at least imo(most of the time)

Are you looking forward to season 2 of Fortitude? I have no idea what the storyline is. The new cast members are impressive, Dennis Quaid, Michelle Fairley, Parminder Nagra etc, plus the returning cast. Season 2 is 10 episodes which might be preferable since I did think season 1 could have been a bit shorter.

reply

Well at the end of season one I was kind of in a state of disrepair, all of my favorite characters had died. I had no idea it was going to go for a second season and I felt that the story was told expertly, it unfolded very well and it was really engaging to me. I was forming all sorts of murder theories and at the end I felt it ended solid. I mean end of series solid.

Alas, to my surprise they have went ahead and forged a second season and added a great new cast in replacement of those who didn't make it. I'm extremely curious about what they have in store for us, very curious.
So now yes I'm very much looking forward to the second season. Fortitude season one was imo quite exceptional at times and emotionally trying at others, it's too bad it's on such an obscure network here in the US called WGN, I found the channel only after finding the series Salem and traced it back to the source, I was quite impressed at the high level of quality for a such a new fledgling network. I don't know who owns it(WGN) or produces the shows, but I gather it has a UK connection as well or is a subsidiary of a much bigger name production company.

The locations are very similar because the two towns both shows were filmed in, are lika 51 km apart

That is false for the most part. Fortitude is filmed in East Iceland (mostly in Reyðarfjörður, Eskifjörður etc). The only part of Trapped that is shot in East Iceland are the ship scenes and on the port. The rest of the series is filmed in Siglufjörður which is in the North of Iceland. Siglufjörður is closer to Reykjavík than to Reyðarfjörður.

If you are familiar with Iceland, can you tell me what and where is the large tower looming in the background of some of the shots of Reykjavík ... what is that thing that looks like the London Shard?
