liking it so far but very annoying SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

I like Belgium (I hate how the idiot NIGEL FARAGE says it is a made up country, they all are made up you, people have died for Belgium in 2 world wars)and I like Science Fiction and disaster films so I am liking this but it is very annoying.

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

This is low budget, the teacher takes a school group to an infectious diseases hospital, odd choice but maybe essential to the plot, but the hospital is in the middle of a city? crazy and only one teacher for the 10 worst behaved kids in the world?

Like SALAMANDER this Belgian drama seems to enjoy showing how crap the government and state is.

I know Belgium is a split up federal state and there is not just one government but they are shown again as dishonest and badly organised.
The police in this are impossible to take seriously, they are shown as unprofessional and lacking pride in the job,in real life people like police and ambulance workers would be be the heroes in this situation, they are trained in emergency situations and have a strong team spirit.

But I will keep watching it and see what happens next.

I thought that was odd too, but the University of Antwerp has an infectious disease department and is pretty much slap bang in the city center (judging by Google maps). https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/rg/vaxinfectio/#

Not sure about your other observations since I've only seen the pilot, but got the impression that the police did a decent job given the information they had to work with at the time.

Will carry on watching as well.

If the opposite of Love is indifference, what's the opposite of Hate?

That clinic is indeed there; I used to walk past it every day when I used to live in Antwerpen.

Agreed, grew up there (local schools not the brit school)

the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp is right in the center of Antwerp

So the hospital is really in the centre of town, seems odd to me but the London one is in the city as well.

I was already thinking of visiting Antwerp, looking at photos on the internet it looks amazing, but of course this drama does not show all the interesting streets and buildings.

You should. It's my favourite city by a long shot. I've lived there for over seven years and it's one I would love to return to one day again.

There are some other great European cities but Antwerpen is simply superb; it has great history and culture and as a small cosmopolitian city it simply cannot be beat.

I've lived in the Diamond District and in the heart of the old town right on the medieval high street and also on the 'Left Bank'.

Do go and do spend lots of time wandering around; it's got a vibe of its own. And don't forget to bring a spare liver: the beers there are world class (that is one thing that Belgium does exceedingly well at) and the food is good there too.

If you're interested in art to any degree then pop into the museum in the South (just on the other side of the tropical disease institute) and you'll be amazed at the number of Old Master painters whom you may have thought were Dutch but were acually from Antwerpen itself.

Not only does it have history, the culture there is also forward looking too. It may be the second city in Belgium but it far surpasses Brussels and, in my opinion, it's a better place to visit than Ghent or Bruges (though both are very good).

Go there, spend a week and enjoy yourself. You won't regret it. I have a chum who went there in 1983 for three days. Over thirty years later he's still there...

Plenty of cities have hospitals in or near the center.

reply

Yes but plenty of places have infectious disease hospitals out in the country.

You want people to be able to get to hospitals easily but you want infectious people to be out of town?

reply

The location of the hospital doesn't bother me. What did make me laugh though is how the convenience store family didn't have any security: they allowed that bum to walk into the joint three times with the intention of stealing supplies. Then two other low lifes were able to waltz in there too with a machine gun.

You find the location of the hospital odd, but there is a historical reason.

It's not just a medical hospital that treats STD's and other infectious diseases, it's also an scientific institute where all kinds of tropical diseases are researched (it's quite renowned for its science department).

You may or may not know that before 1960 the Congo ("the tropics") used to be a colony of Belgium, and most ships that went over there departed from the city of Antwerp over the river the Schelde.

They docked in docks that don't exist anymore today (they've been filled up in the sixties to create a parking lot and public space)

The hospital is located close to where the docks used to be : when the ships came back from the Congo, the sailors or passengers who brought back tropical diseases (as they often did) could be checked into the hospital right away after docking (so they didn't have to mix too much with the local population : straight from the boat to the hospital)

Also : in those days, the city wasn't as big as it is today, and the location of the hospital was not in the center but more on the outskirts of the city...

Hope this satisfies you curiosity somewhat...
