Shopping cancelled show to other channels

Who owns the rights for a certain television show? Is it show's creator who also serves as executive producer and lead writer or studio?

And why, whoever owns the show, never (with few exceptions) shop the show, what got cancelled after full season, to another network, cable or even streaming service?

My own television schedule contains all shows from Network, Cable and Hulu. Season starts June 1st.

Depends on the show.

In this case, Heroes is jointly owned by Tim Kring and NBC-Universal. Neither can make a move without the other's approval. In fact, NBC tried to restart the series as a comic several years ago, and announced this at SDCC with writer Cullen Bunn and I forget the artist, both of whom had spent weeks+ on this project. Tim Kring was on vacation and was frantically called in to tell NBC not without his consent. This actually got the ball rolling on Zeroes Rescorned.

I am NOT holding my breath on another series, but if it by some miracle did, NBC would likely shuffle it off to one of their cable networks like syfylys or G4.

NBC wants some of that superhero pie, and that's 90% of the reason they bothered with Rescorned, because it's an IN-HOUSE production. This is why they tried Constantine, then replaced that with Lucifer, which I am amazed they gave that a greenlight for s2.

Then again, they axed Southland after airing promos and while it was in the middle of filming s2e6, so everyone had their contracts fulfilled for the following week, at least. AND at least John Wells got them to sell it to TNT for another three seasons and boatload of awards that NBC couldn't touch! LOL

OBTW, Supergirl was licensed from Warners by CBS. CBS-Paramount is part-owner of the CW, with Warners, as it is the merging of two former networks WB and UPN. So this "trade" of the show from CBS to CW is more on the paperwork side. I don't think they've said yet if they are moving production to Canada with the rest of the DC and CW shows, or not. I would bet good money they are.
