I loved the first season of heroes, thought the rest was mediocre.
Is this show comparable to the first season? Or more like the rest of the show?
Does the cancellation have any impact on the story? Or is the first season able to conclude the plot?

It was designed as "one and done", altho Kring LIED when he said that. the last minute sets up a new story, but can be easily dismissed.
the first half isn't too bad, but the back half just fails on every level like BAD fanfiction, esp after the "reveal" of a couple characters' "true identities". the Big Bad's motivation is shoehorned in at the end as the always popular "rape motivation" trope, which is hackneyed at best and should make you question everything.
Many complained because their favorites from the original were not present, when those actors stated over and over they were NOT interested. Save one, but her actions behind the scenes during s4 are likely they never called her. Then again, 90% of the plot hangs on her demise to begin with. again, BAD fanfiction drivel.
Oh, and several "classic" characters are only in the TIE IN NOVELS that were NOT very publicized. this includes one new character that plays into the above "reveal"/cliffhanger, altho people still debate who it really was, despite their preferred character was already present in that novel. There was also a comic, but I could never find more than the first issue, which of course had six covers. It featured one of the new characters that was teased as having powers, but then they changed their mind and ignored what teases they already gave us.
also, don't forget the "Dark Matter" prequel shorts on YouTube, IF they're still available. Also, there was a short-lived scifi series "Dark Matters" starring John Noble (LotR, Fringe) that you may run across, this is NOT the same series. DM sets up two characters, even if we don't see one for half the series, but brings back one original, who barely has anything to do.

Who's the actress whose behind the scenes Season 4 behavior likely got her axed? I'd not heard anything of that.

she's blonde and a focal point of this series, too, yet never TECHNICALLY appeared on screen. I think a few seconds of footage from original series was it? (def one audio clip.) We do see her body but it was covered and likely played by a mannequin, if not an actual stand in.
