"May I" vs "Can I"

If Ben was being such a strict grammar-nerd ("The word 'unique' cannot be modified.") he would never allow the kids to say, "Can I [fill in the blank]?" Ben never once corrected them to say, "May I [fill in the blank]?" And I noticed it quite a few times.

Yeah, what a hypocrite. I demand a refund. What's more, even though I totally enjoyed this film previously, I'm going to downgrade it now that I'm well informed on this total disregard for character writing continuity. Matt Ross, you should be ashamed.
