The Taliban would have kidnapped a Canadian. Today's ISIS would have held him hostage for later execution.
Claiming he is someone else from a country that is not at war with the terrorists might just save him from execution should he be captured and also a lower ransom to be paid.

They referenced it in the film. Something about many of the private security making up "fake" alter egos... Being ex special forces etc.
A Canadian security contractor is not as "exciting" or cool as an ex special forces/military guy from NZ.
Exactly. I understood from that part it was for proffesional advantage as well as increasing their "sex appeal" to the few women available. (Kiwis and Aussies would be more "exotic" to American and European women?)

Because private companies, like the media, hire their own security in many situations.
Her personal security, other than on the FOB or embedded, isn't the responsibility of the US Govt.
It's the responsibility of her employer.
