Bigotry to the next level

When will Hwood stop produce Bigot pieces of "butt pies", you have Latinos/as playing Afghanis and Pakis and you make fun of those cultures the same way as an infamous Politician did with his Propaganda ministry which produced
"Jud Süß" and more, not only that but also that dialog you can see i the trailer which states "[...] you are a serious piece of ass, in new York you are 6 to 7, here 9 Borderline 10".
There is a fine line between Satire, Comedy and just blant Bigot Fun and as it seems by the trailer and theme of this flick it crosses all of them

This movie looks about as appealing as a bag of hot sick. A shame that Unfortunate events like wars are treated so flippantly by Hollywood.

Yeah, let's sanitize the way combat veterans talk when deployed in war zones... because that does a great service to Truth and History... ξ€²

PS: It's a pretty obvious result--verified by ANY male service veteran--that just due to their sheer SCARCITY in forward-deployed military units, even wimminz of below average physical attractiveness are going to garner male attention at a much higher level than they ever did (or could) garner in civilian life... duh.

This movie does look like a pile of crap, honestly. I'm Afghan and I thought the trailer looked like racist trash. It was full of stereotypes and the Afghans were portrayed as caricatures. Not to mention the fact that it seems like none of the Afghan characters were played by Afghans. It's making a mockery of both Afghans and Pakistanis it seems.

reply

while they may not have been played by Afghan people.. they portrayed Afghan people in a very good light.
Some of the nicest and most endearing characters were the Afghan people in the movie.

Maybe if you saw the whole movie, and not just the trailer, you would see it's a good movie.

I'm sorry, but I cannot enjoy a film that has people in brown face and white washes the Afghan characters. Abbott and Molina's characters alone irritate me on a high level. I'm not saying you can't enjoy the movie or anything like that, it's just that for me as an Afghan, I have a different perspective of films like this versus people who are not.

Yeah I do actually see your point on that. There are actors of afghan heritage in USA. Couldnt they find any available who were suited? For me Molina wasnt terribly grating because I just viewed that character as a typical sleazy politician who could have been from anywhere in the world (but still, why not cast an Afghan American), but Abbot really distracted me. Robbie did as well because I could hear her australian accent slipping through, and what the hell was the bodyguard who was a canadian playing a kiwi who sounded like an aussie? Oh that's right, the film makers said they didnt think anyone would notice *facepalm*.

If you only saw the trailer, however, as someone else in the thread said, it's misdirection. I saw the trailer after the movie and thought it was for a different film it's so unlike it. I really dont think it made a mockery of Afghans and Pakistanis, though. It's more making mockery of the journalism IMO, and westerners being out of their element.

I get what you mean, but to me it was just so bothersome and I can't get past that. The Afghan characters being played by non-Afghan actors in brownface, stereotypical garb, and then the over the top Borat-like fake accents. To me it just kind of felt like Mickey Rooney's role in Breakfast at Tiffany's, where he was playing a Japanese man complete with the yellowface and everything.

Yes I totally appreciate your PoV. Much like Brian Dennehy playing Kublai Khan in Marco Polo as recently as 2007. As much as I think Dennehy is great, that was a ridiculous casting decision and I wont be watching it. If Hollywood is so hell bent on celebrating diversity which I think is great, why not give actors a fair go. I looked up actors in US with afghan heritage and there are quite a few, and highly acclaimed.

OT slightly, I bought some pashtun hats when I was over that way some years ago. The hats used in the movie ddnt look right to me. Thoughts? Just a nitpick but it caught my eye because I'm a hat nut.

reply

About the pakol/Pashtun hats used in the film, it looked like cheap knock-offs to me. It had the right idea/concept, but you could tell they were budget versions of a pakol.

reply

Thanks for the clarificatio, afsana. As I said, I'm a hat nut so it distracted me a bit.

Do you get upset at all the Brits who play Americans?

reply

The problem with modern liberal leftists is that they are not multi-cultural in that they do not respect the practices of other cultures or religions. It's a really sick form of hypocrisy as far as I'm concerned.

They say, "We're here to represent the people and that includes you poor minorities."

Then they say, "Oh wait. You don't play by our rules of conduct, so not only do we not represent you, we HATE you."

reply

Touche'!... I can see clearly the archetypal lib-lefty, writhing in embarrassment after being skewered by his/her/its own hypocrisy!... no, wait... embarrassment would require a sense of shame... must be a rash that's causing the writhing. 😜

Sounds like a topic for the "Stuff White People Like" blog. #266 Foreign Movies: White people like movies about foreigners only when all important foreigners are played by white people. Start with Ghandi and work your way in any direction forward or backwards.

I will tell you this much. I would much rather have Hispanics play Afghan characters or roles than Indians. As an Afghan i would be offended if that were to happen. They are other movies in the past that have done this such as the one movie where Mark wahlberg is a Special Forces solider in Afghanistan, almost half of the Afghan Characters were played by indians. Where for people who know about Afghanistan and Afghans in general that Character selection for that movie was way off. This movie is still your stereotypical Hollywood farce but i've seen much worse.

And the irony is that you were so busy spewing your SJW keyboard diarrhea that you managed to throw in a racial slur yourself. Good one.
