Bad Way to Start the Show

No reason to show the 9 year old girl drowning the cat....

Time to watch reruns of The X-Files....

reply

You do that.

FYI people died too.

reply

Right?! A 16 year old boy died lol.
Anyways, it's a show... some people need to get a grip!
Heard the same griping about The Leftovers pilot from people... Ridiculous.

All those stupid people who wrote off the show because of a plot element involving having to kill feral dogs was beyond annoying, and I wish all of those complainers would have to watch two straight months of animals being (fictionally) killed. I don't think anyone makes me more sick than people who think it's perfectly okay to show human beings violently killing each other but people killing an animal (esp if it's a violent) is crossing some kind of line for them. Truly sick. (And the comeback "It's not okay because animals are better than humans" is just as sickening.)

Get a grip? I'm sorry, but that scene really bothered me. I seriously could have done without that. However, seeing how upset and remorseful the little girl was, once she "came back to herself," helped me get through that scene. But I really wish they hadn't done that at all.

Yes, get a grip.

People die all the time. Poor animals are too weak to defend themselves.

reply

Oh, please, who cares??

In no way does it signal anything less than worthwhile about the show.

Not a fan of animal abuse, real or implied. It's a cliche and it's nasty to watch. Dead human characters are fine because people can fight back, but animal abuse is overdone in horror, especially killing cats. It's like, "Here's this cute, defenseless animal--oh, look, we killed it."

Also, I really can't stand the creepy girl. I was starting to dislike her incessant presence in the promos, already, and she's actually worse in the pilot. Meh.

There wasn't even a sign that there was an animal anywhere around the house, then all of a sudden like 5 mins. before the end, throw one onscreen & kill it. Just lazy sick writing.

You realize the cat is an actor itself and didn't actually die, right? The cat probably had a glorious time getting loved on while on set. Jeez...these posts are so ridiculous. Not to mention I thought that was the most powerful scene in the pilot...

reply

The cat was a better actor / actress than the girl. The cat should had thrown her in the tub instead!!

After seeing a gazillion such scenes in horror, I don't find them powerful at all. I find them lazy. It seems that writers do it whenever they want to do something "horrific" that doesn't involve actually setting up characters and then killing them off--and probably because they aren't allowed to kill kids onscreen.

That was exactly my reaction.

Except I don't think the kid-killing part occurred to me.

reply

Yep, as soon as that scene happened I just knew there be plenty of posts later about the poor kitty being killed...

It's kind of not established yet how truly evil the entity within the little girl actually is, but let's just say it's capable of a lot more than just drowning a cat.

Never understood people that have no problem with people being killed, even a kid in this case, but don't you dare touch an animal! I don't get it.

I never did either. I love animals and I think animal cruelty is something we can avoid, since we are the "superior species" but hmmm... this is fiction, and if you have a problem with a scene where a fictional cat is being drowned (not graphically at all btw) but you went through several scenes where actual people were killed without blinking an eye, you should probably see a doctor about being so blatantly immune to the value of human life.

I'm sure those people wouldn't have posted if the kid drowned a baby but a cat? it's sick and twisted!

The one that seemed totally ridiculous was the Fargo TV show. The killer has graphically killed a couple dozen people, some of them nice folks, and the posters on the boards here are cheering him on and idolizing him. Then 7 or so episodes of hero worship later he shoots a dog and suddenly people are condemning the show and saying how they aren't watching anymore. Ludicrous.

The thing that bothered me about this was how predictable it was. It's such a horror cliché. Let's introduce an attractive, charismatic animal, only to kill it. Because that's what you do with animals, you kill them, to scare people. Stupid. It would have been far more effective IMO had the child fought with her occupier and won, and put the pet out of the room.

It also seemed so random. There was no character development of this child's occupying personality, to make sense of it. So, he's a pet killer? I guess now we know that? It's underwhelming.

what's your favorite X-Files episode? my favorite is the one where those creepy kids poison another kid. or the one where the telekinetic kid kills another kid by closing the school bus door on their scarf. or when that kid used a demonic doll at the supermarket to make everyone claw their own eyes out.
