Is this worth watching?

Is it a fun show? Addicting? Interesting? I didn't want to dive into any threads because I don't want to see spoilers, but I've heard some good things about this, though I see some threads made that don't talk too great about it in the subject (but you see that everywhere).

That's such a subjective question. You will get a variety of opinions. I'm sure some people loved it but without offering any spoilers I would have to say I didn't think it was worth it. I was in to it for the first few episodes too. I told myself to be patient and it would get better and answers would come. Some answers do come but by the end of the show I looked back and considered it a waste of time.

A large part of that is that I need to be able to empathize with characters. I felt the main character in this, Jack Whelan, came across as a whiny and depressed creep who is living in denial for most of the season.

I'm sure that if your beautiful blonde wife miscarried and buried the fetus in the back yard and subsequently left you for a dead jazz trumpeter (but not before smashing your giant flat-screen TV), and then some dude was murdered right in front of you, and then another dude was murdered right in front of you, and then your high school buddy jumped off of a building (again, right in front of you), you would be like, all cheerful and well-adjusted.

Sheesh...

Thanks for the spoilers. I'm sure the OP appreciated them.

Sorry.

Saying sorry for posting spoilers is fine, but you could also go back and either delete it or edit your post with spoilers warning. You can also put future spoilers behind a tag that allows people to click on it to view the text.

I've learned not to read the boards at all unless I've seen the show or movie, or if I wouldn't care if it was spoiled. I learned the hard way over the years.

He came across like that from the beginning. He acted like an *beep* to Gary and most people around him way before Gary's swan dive.

Well, I hate to seem argumentative, but when Jack first met up with Gary, Amy had already been acting weird, and Jack was starting to worry that she'd actually gone missing in Seattle (which she had). Add to that the fact that Gary's whole reason for contacting Jack in the first place was to give him the news that his wife was consorting with shady people.

Again, these are things that might make even the best of us depressed and crabby.

I thought Jack came across like that from the beginning because he hadn't gotten over the shooting when he was a cop. They really didn't delve in to that at all except for the flashbacks which didn't tell us much of anything. Frankly, I got the impression it was a wonder his wife didn't leave him even before Rose came along.

It is a series that takes a big risk with losing its audience because it reveals what is going on very slowly. It is actually all there in the dialogue but you really have to listen.

The acting is a lot of fun, especially Frain who plays it as if Lou Reed was an assassin (which he kind of was in a way.) Jon Simm acts like he's doing Ibsen at the old Vic. Not that that is a criticism. There are a couple of riveting scenes between him and Sorvino (also good.) It is a surprisingly adult show. Beautifully directed and well written if occasionally frustrating.

I say go for it. And what goes around comes around, so I'm told.

I enjoyed it thoroughly and plan to watch it marathon-style over the weekend. The low imdb score is due to the people who can't handle a slow reveal. It you look at the ratings for each episode, they're much higher.

Take the plunge, and then let us know what you think.

I agree. People, and even I, seem to have less time or tolerance to let a show take it's time to unfold. New shows mostly realize this and tend to unload a ton of story in usually a less well-written fashion. They try to grab the audience without worrying about a good story until they're sure the show has been picked up, but sometimes, it's too late to let it be a great show, and then the audience gets wise, stop watching it, and the rating fall hard, the the show is cancelled. I've seen it happen more than a few times. It's a shame.

It's okay. I think that the beginning is a bit scattered because they've got a lot of different plates spinning and they're trying to be coy with the secret of the show (as if we don't know from the previews).

Unless Alpert's covered in bacon grease, I don't think Hugo can track anything.
