I just finished watching the entire 6 hour series. What I don't understand is how Madison crossed Shepard's path to begin with. It was alluded to in the fact that Shepard said that he was looking for a child that Marcus could inhabit, and he would take care of it before Marcus could kill anyone.
I was just reading this mb to decide if I was going to watch it again today so I might be just a bit off but
Marcus had made a deal under the table to be reactivated. He knew the group was against him. I'm assuming you mean James Frain's character when you say Shepard, right? He did as Marcus asked but he activated Marcus many years too soon and we are not sure why. We know he doesn't want to kill the little girl. Maybe he knows something about human psychology that we don't. After all, they've been body jumping for thousands of years and surely they have made mistakes in the past. So whatever Shepard is doing he thinks he knows how to kill Marcus' psyche once and for all but not kill the little girl too. His intentions are good but his plan has gone pear shaped.

But it still doesn't explain as to how Madison got thrown into the mix to begin with. The ironic thing is that Madison got it right on the beach, Marcus severely underestimated a child's love for their parents. He learned nothing in the centuries that Marcus's soul jumped from body to body.
Shepard works for the Reverti. He and the other Shepherds do most of the actual legwork for the organization. The Reverti had grown tired of Marcus Fox, whose bloodlust they felt brought uneccesary risk to them. They wanted Fox dead for good. But Fox knew that Shepherd needed money to care for his ailing brother. So he made a deal. He'd pay off Shepherd who would bring him back to life off the books. Then Fox could get his revenge since the other Reverti wouldn't be expecting him. Shepherd planned to double cross Fox, however, by triggering him as a child and then killing him. But when push came to shove, Shepherd couldn't bring himself to kill sweet innocent Madison.
Unless Alpert's covered in bacon grease, I don't think Hugo can track anything.

shareBeen bothering me since I read your post. The only thing I can think of occurred to me was when Jack saw the little boy in the hospital after visiting Madison. As a key element seems to be the number 9, and he seemed to arranged a time to go and get Fox, perhaps Richard just picked an auspicious day and went to a maternity ward? Could have been any child, just happened to be her, as everyone else is linked.
Can't get the spoiler thing to work, hope the above is suitably vague.
