Regarding That Missing Plane Scene...

...I found it frustrating that NONE of them ever thought to film their live action/fight sequences in front of a green screen, and use a miniature, or CGI of the plane and the scenery as the background...

Would have cost next to nothing, compared to the money they spent and the time to construct that full scale plane set up...anyone else agree?...;)

Well their special effects 'expert' suggested they use a miniature. That full plane scene at the end did look good though in comparison to the rest of the film they made.

Very true, it looked fantastic (I just finished the film)...I was more or less attempting to rationalize a way they could have saved $$, as that was an obvious problem for them...so expensive!

BUT...overall, what they did worked exceptionally, I certainly cannot argue with the final product...I'm just used to trying to conceive of ways to cut corners, as all the projects I engage in are required to have a 'zero budget' (simply no money to invest in them, as they are 'just for fun') so my 'instincts' kinda kicked in while watching the documentary...

But you are quite right in your assessment.

But that isn't the way Spielberg did it.

Not with Raiders of the Lost Ark.

reply

LOL...well, of course not...but these guys didn't have access to Spielberg's $$$ either, that was kinda my point...BUT I get what you are saying, and apparently they DID address this possibility in the doc (I missed it somehow...likely gettin' a text or something distracting) and they decided against it for the basic reason you are stating...

So my post was kind of a waste of everyone's time...my apologies...

80% of internet forum posts are a waste of everyone's time - so you're in good company.  j/k

I think it's a fair question, seeing as you missed it being mentioned. But I will bring up that you also mention CGI in your first post. I haven't watched the doc yet (tonight) so I don't know when they originally got to filming the plane scene. But they started making this in 1981, how good do you think CGI was back then LOL? It was practically non-existent, certainly in the way needed to add a CGI plane by kids in a home movie.
It just made me laugh a bit because you suggested it and we've all got used to everything being doable through CGI.

reply

I meant that they should consider it as a possible option 30 years later (CGI) when they all come together to add the plane scene, not back when they started the project...;)

Watch the doc, you will see what I mean...

On a related note tho, they could have used miniatures and rear projection back in the 80's (I know, I was nerdy enough to make super 8 flicks w/ my friends back then, (see link below for some laughs/an example) and that's what we did), except I learned here in this forum that idea was tossed out, as they wanted to 'do it like Spielberg did it', full scale...I missed that line of exposition...;)

Your post seemed to imply that you meant CGI back then but no biggie, just thought I'd point it out.  Not saying this is you (it clearly isn't) but you read a lot of posts these days that aren't really aware of a pre-CGI movie/TV world. It's kinda sad bit I guess time and tech move on.
I did watch the doc inbetween our posts and yes they could have used it for the addition. Given the problems involved, the rain, the near loss of a job, the rain, the close call on the explosion guy, the rain etc etc, it would have been the safer, less stressful route. Possibly cheaper as well.

They do say they want to do it the way Spielberg did it, which is understandable from their point of view, even we can see other ways around it.
Great doc though, thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. Now I want to see the finished film.

That is the full adaptation as it was BEFORE they completed the plane scene. You have to order the DVD to see the updated version with the plane scene added (it's not linked anywhere I know of)....

Please stop.

Oh!

I thought you had never seen any version...just trying to help...;)

Hey, how can they charge people for a DVD when they were remaking a copyrighted film in the first place? (Just curious, as you seem to know a lot more about this topic than I do)

Thanks in advance...

I've seen it. I think you're confusing me with aoxg28. No big deal. I just wanted to clarify for him/her.

I'm not sure but apparently they got the OK from the right people to be able to sell their version and make money off it. I bought the DVD and it has all the lifted soundtrack effects and music intact.

I'm going to try and see a screening if they ever come into town here. The guys are pretty cool. I've talked a bit with them online and they seem to be pretty stand-up guys.

Please stop.

Yeah, you were getting them confused with me. No biggie, it happens.
Even though I was talking about the full film (with plane scene) I appreciate you posting the link as I hadn't seen any of it. So thanks for that.

They can charge people because it was probably part of Spielberg giving them his blessing. I haven't checked but maybe they are giving any money made to charity? That worked for some other fan films in the past. And whilst it's an excellent tribute to Raiders and the efforts of those guys, it's not exactly going to be competing against it, is it!

Thanks for the info, you guys...appreciated...;)
