*Calling It Now: Could Be 2014's Best Documentary Film*

However, because it is rap and because society doesn't get it, and because 90% of today's teens are more interested in Justin Bieber's hair or what stupid song Katy Perry is going to sing next, and because half of today's losers couldn't tell you what Notorious BIG's real name was, and because most of the idiots that review this movie probably never played Illmatic front to back, and because life's a b****, and then you die,... this movie will get passed over for every major award and because marketing will stink, most will never know this movie was ever released.

Wasn't there already a documentary on Illmatic? I know I've seen interviews with Pete Rock, Q Tip and Premier talking about producing tracks for Nas when he was like 16 - 17 years old, and if I recall correctly, it was actually something well made. It wasn't just some guy interviewing them on the street while they were out walking their dog.

Wow...

... Clearly, someone doesn't have enough faith in the power of this documentary, to allow it to be presented without giving excuses for its failure beforehand.

It dont make you a hiphop fan not knowing who Christopher Wallace is let alone know the impact the album Illmatic haf on it's release either tho. That album changed hiphop and my life

I couldn't tell you Biggie's real name, or Dre's or Snoop's, but guess what I still buy their music.

I feel sorry for you. It's almost like not knowing who Thomas Cruise Mapother IV is.

I don't care what their "real" names are, I like their music.. don't care what a drummer's name is, what a singer's name is. Plus, the rappers you called out, have chosen to use other names, so maybe you shouldn't be so big on their "real" names, because apparently they prefer the names they've chosen.

Probably NOT going to be the best doc of 2014. That currently belongs to "Life Itself", the doc about Roger Ebert. "Code Black" is another one people should check out. The Nas doc probably won't be better than the ATCQ doc either. Nas is a terrible interviewer. He's very guarded, and similar to Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch. I'm sure lots of history will be divulged, and I'm seeing it, on some fan *beep* but I'm realistic about how awesome this doc will be. It'll be a "puff piece", like the 9th Wonder doc was...

I always feel documentaries are too long, even this one at 75 min I felt was too long. I think it had potential in the beginning, but then was repetitive with the performances.

reply

It will get passed over because it isn't a particularly good documentary.
