Woman vs. Child

Apparently in France menstruation is a big joke, i didn't get it.. Is the only part of the movie that i didn't like, but maybe be a cultural thing, right?

I think the mum exaggerated partially because it happened relatively late (the doctor asked her earlier in the film and she replied "still nothing", so it was something they had been waiting for). I also think that the movie made a point of how there was less sense of privacy between the family members because of having to share more embarrassing/intimate issues than the average family (e.g. when using the daughter as interpreter every time they go to the doctor, when the daughter has to hear them every time they have sex because they don't realise they're so loud, or when the brother doesn't feel he needs to close the bathroom door when he's peeing). So I don't think it's cultural - it was mostly a family quirk. Although I think that in my country as well we have the slapping tradition (I didn't get slapped, but I've definitely heard of it).
