Is it any good?

Does anyone know?

In short? Yes, I very much enjoyed it.

Being a Dane myself I might be more than slightly biased, but I thought What We Become was great. It's not an over-the-top all-out zombie gore fest. Here less is truly more. Instead the movie has a creepy atmosphere that builds up slowly as well as characters that are very much so grounded in reality, which makes you feel for them all the more. This means that when the zombies do appear, the impact is that much bigger.

The use of sound effects and editing is really good and might startle you. Horror movies is one of my favorite genres, which means that I'm kind of jaded when it comes to jump scares. This movie, however, has one that really got me. It's not all doom and gloom, though. There are a few laughs scattered about the movie including a downright hilarious scene involving a rabbit.

I think it's a darn shame that the first Danish zombie movie ever only gets a very limited release. Only four cinemas in Denmark are screening it. Two in Zealand and one in Funen and another one in Jutland. Furthermore, in fourteen days’ time it will have left theaters completely in favor of a speedy release via VOD. That being said I kind of understand that it didn't get the wider release I feel it deserves. I saw it yesterday in one of the smaller screens at a multiplex. The seating capacity was 61 and I think we were about 51 people at that screening. Those aren’t exactly impressive numbers. It could be that the distributors felt that the market is oversaturated with zombie movies or their opinion might be that the general public prefer other genres, but it couldn’t have hurt to spend just a little bit of money on advertising. In fact, I find the lack of advertising downright disturbing. Apart from a few mentions on Facebook I haven’t really noticed any advertising to speak of. At least not in Denmark.

I see that What We Become has been featured at a couple of festivals, and I do hope that this movie finds an audience internationally and not just on VOD, because it deserves to be seen on a big screen.

well just remeber is was not a expensive mad movie it did cost

120,000,000.00 DKK = 18,511,200.00 USD

reply

That doesn't mean anything, Some of the most impressive genre films I've seen were made well below the 500k number.

My favorite Zombie movie of all time remains Night of the Living Dead. Low-budget, black and white, yet still very effective.

Second favorite? Probably I Walked with a Zombie, which is not really a horror movie. Very old movie, though.

I'm sure this Danish film is better than Fear the Waking Dead. Nothing could be worse than that TV show. Well, except maybe that short-lived I, Zombie tv show.

reply

that short-lived I, Zombie tv show.

iZombie was recently renewed for a 3rd season.

That's a pretty good sized budget for an indie film.

Are you implying it sucks because they didn't have enough money, or that it would have been better if they had a bigger budget? Because 18 million dollars is a huge budget. To put that amount into perspective, The Purge had a 3 million dollar budget, Saw had 1.2 million, and It Follows had 2 million. One of my favorite recent films, which was very well done with great special effects and acting, was Ex Machina and even that movie only cost 15 million.

reply

Dont know where you got that figure from (120 million danish kr!?) This movie had a budget of 6.5 million danish kr, which is just about 1 million dollars.

reply

Correction;

12-13 million danish kr.

I thought it had potential, but it was so slow that I doubt most will watch to the end. The end does deliver a bit, but it was too little, too late. It's what Fear the Walking Dead should have been, but still too slow even for that. I actually liked the characters. This family and their friends weren't bad. This movie needed a tighter script.

Tiny spoiler The family ate the little girl's rabbit when they ran out of food. That's where the bunny went. It was very subtly implied. They were eating rabbit stew.

reply

I actually really enjoyed it. No, it was not slow. It's called a build up. The characters were like able as well. It focuses on the initial phases of a viral breakout and the initial pandemonium. Give it a try.

reply

I just caught this by surprise today. I thought it was actually rather good. Plenty of suspense, good build up without being overly gory. The actors all turned in good performances, the FX and makeup were good, and it held my attention the whole time. It's what The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead should have started with. On whole it was well balanced. I especially liked the interactions between the family and outsiders. And very believable in terms of peoples reaction to the Zombie apocalypse.

Saw it last night, and it was pretty good! The first 40 minutes or so are pretty darned slow (yes, yes, "build up" or whatever). Like, nothing happens at all for the first 20/30 minutes, and it is not a long movie - only 80 minutes, I think. Anyways, if you stick with it, the ending is surprisingly brutal, not in the overt gore/violence sense, but because this is a family that you've gotten to know throughout the movie. It's a downer, is the only spoiler I'm going to give. I gave it a 6/10.

Also, I really liked the synthesizer music, but it was completely out of place in a modern zombie movie - they used a similar score in It Follows, which worked because that movie had more of a throwback/"what decade is it" feel. This one was very much set in the modern era with phones, new cars, contemporary clothing etc. But, anyways, I did enjoy the music, just wish it had fit a bit better.

They're coming to get you, Barbara!

I was thinking of It Follows the whole time watching this! It is weird but I enjoy 80's Synth. I think this movie was a throw back/ nod to Romero's 80's Zombie Movies. Slow walking, Light loving Zombies. Good Stuff!

You can actually watch this one online now, but the English subs are *beep* up! You don't no what there going on about most of the time, so unless you can speak Denmark go watch it online now or if you don't speak Denmark "like me" then i guess we're just going to have to wait with our fingers crossed that there will be a great copy with perfect eng subs in the near future!? Or to even purchase a copy that would be even better! Oh well. So keep them fingers crossed...
