One simple observation

Charlotte Rampling looked beautiful in this movie as did Geraldine James.

I think American movie maker's are only catching on in the last decade or so, that older women can play lead roles and real characters that don't have to be molded in makeup and bustiers to be georgeous - and I see much more appreciation of the real woman thru the older actresses in British
movies.
This movie was a perfect example of the beauty of older women.

Ms. Rampling has aged quite well. Another good example is (Canadian) Sarah Polley's excellent adaptation of Alice Munro's short story, "The Bear Came Over the Mountain." Titled "Away from Her," it stars the magnificent Julie Christie, who has aged like the finest wine.

my simple observation is that this movie is that Stan Kubrick would have loved it.... so did my wife and I.

Also noted in films of this nature are the rich emotional lives of the so-called "elderly". Love stories are not just for the young, even 45 year old marriages fail when emotional upheaval befalls them and this was the telling of one reason - that the wife felt she was merely a substitute for the husband's long gone one true love. I found this a compelling story, not just for the beautiful way it unfolded but the careful character studies and interesting explanations of their life together. Some might consider it slow, even plodding but if you're in the right frame of mind this is a quiet and melancholy window into the lives of two thoughtful people who reside in the beautiful English countryside cottage.
