Geoff Murdered Katya On The Mountain

Because she was pregnant and he didn't want children. He married Kate because she was agreeable to that. Her discovery of Katya's pregnancy made Geoff sick because he had to wonder if she figured out what he had done. Kate had to then decide to live with it all.

That had occurred to me as well. I think that would explain his obsession with climate change and the fact that it may have caused his body to be discovered. Unfortunately, like Kate, we'll never know for sure.

reply

Good point about the climate change obsession.

reply

Thanks. I was expecting the murder to be a plot twist, but I guess the filmmakers decided to leave that up to us. Twists that we expect aren't really twists.

The movie played with the idea of a possible murder in the beginning. It is not likely though, because of the resemblance of Kate to Catia in name and appearence. He clearly had deep seated feelings for Catia as he was still so emotional about her body being found 50 years later, he started smoking again and couldn't sleep without seeing her picture in the attic. He only chose to marry Kate because she reminded him of his true love. This is also what Kate figured out in the end. She was a replacement body only.

Ok. But I'm wondering why the husband referred to the guide as Kerouac at least a few times. I know who Jack Kerouac was. And maybe the reference was to describe the guide as wandering off the trail--allowing the opportunity for the husband to kill Katya.

reply

The husband states that he detests Kerouac and as such uses the name to express his dislike for the guide. The guide and Katya took a liking to each other and the husband remembers how antagonized he was because of this. His detailed memory of their interactions and the re-emergence of his feelings stresses how fiery his passion still is for Katya.

He describes her death as her falling into a hole. The hole is still there, while she isn't. The hole inside of him (his true love was taken from him by mere accidentm, completely changing the destiny of his life) is, like the hole in the ice, still there. In the film it becomes quite apparent by the end that Kate hasn't been able to fill the void either.

There is very little evidence that supports any homicidal tendencies towards Katya. Perhaps his obsession with climate change suggests how hopeful he is that he might once again see her, if only the ice melts a bit further? He even imagines how she might not have changed, due to the coldness of the ice. In all of this I recognize longing - not a murderer remembering his deeds.

Finally: If he'd murdered her, why didn't he murder the guide as he must have been a witness?

reply

Very good. Thanks.

I dont see murder in this story cause of husbands character. Sentimental as he was in the end dont indicate to anything pshycopath behaviour. Wife felt very alone in the end of the dance as she was supposed to feel in these circumstances. She wasnt replacement body, thats a bit unfair and cruel, she was just replacement person. She was just someone to him to be with in reality for him but he didnt want children cause she wasnt IT. And children is everything in relationship, thats history and legacy you give to the world. At that time people moved on no matter what. But he couldnt move on in his heart. But he just did it what he was supposed to do. Does not matter if it was society's ecpectations or just his upbringing. She still felt like sequel. Wife still felt the horribly cruel fate and lifetime she spent was a big lie. Even if it was nice most of the time. It was still something "that came after everything".

I watched this late last night and was quite drowsy but I was waiting for the murder plot twist to reveal itself as well. I may have to watch it again, but while a bit more awake!

reply

I doubt Geoff killed Katya as the guide would have been a witness. No where does Geoff say that Katya was pregnant, and it's not mentioned in the film that I recall but its possible. The premise that a long-gone love could harm a 45 year old marriage is veritably unlikely and if I was Kate I'd just laugh at the old goat and allow him his fantasy. I'd also sleep in a different bedroom mainly because he was so irritating.

reply

Well I just watched the film again and I did see the scene in the attic, the last picture slide where Katya is holding her stomach showing a baby bump. I stand corrected and this does paint another picture of their marriage even tho it was not in any dialogue. Don't know how I didn't see this in the theater, but Katya was holding a baby bump.

reply

Missed it.Thank you.
Wonderful film.

reply

I wondered. But no evidence. But what about the baby? I was thinking abortion but she is way too far along in that picture.

reply

I thought it was going in that direction for a while, but it turned out that he loved Katya and had never gotten over her. The song that he picked for their wedding was Smoke gets in your eyes, a song about love lost. We see it dawn upon Kate that he had always been influenced by that event. He kept all her pictures, while he never took any of himself with Kate.

reply

Did anybody see 'the guide' pictured in the photos?

I did not. Thus I assumed Geoff had pushed Katya, a very sad looking woman, into the crevass.

The actual behavior of Geoff, in his intonations, belies the febrile theory he killed Katya. There is no intention on the part of the filmmakers to push this theory in any way. There IS, however, in the final scene, which seemingly everyone missed while searching out the last kernal of popcorn that fell through their laps onto the chairs they sat on, as Their Song, the Platters' Smoke Gets In Your Eyes ends, Kate withdraws her hand suddenly from his with a look of horror and revelation on her face, as the movie cuts to black and the credits roll. She is reacting to the lyrics he chose way back when they married which, when actually listened to, evoke the tears in the song due to the loss of a lost love---Katya, the true subject of the song for Geoff all along. Kate was the rebound bride, the substitute, she realizes, as we do too if we actually pay attention, throughout their 45 years of marriage.
