Moving at the Pace of 45 Years!
I like Charlotte Rampling as an actress, she's very good, her performances are subtle, powerful and vulnerable. I've seen her in Vers le Sud and thought, boy! She knocked that role out of the park.
When I saw the trailer for "45 Years" I could not wait to see it. The trailer made it seem like a slowly unfolding nail biter mystery, with little clues popping up along the way before it's big surprise at the the end! What made it even more intriguing was the fact that the main characters were an elderly couple.
Finally, it came out, I started watching.... 30 minutes in and Kate and Geoff are just unmoving and uninteresting... 60 minutes in and you see them in the same routine again and again and again (yes I know they're an old couple with habits and a routine).... For me, it was like sifting through sand, hoping to find treasure... Or eavesdropping on your neighbours hoping to find out some juicy info, only to realize they're talking about a bingo game.... The pacing was too slow and the characters did not seem to care much (then again, where do you go after 45 years of your life being with someone).
I must point out that I did appreciate the film, I'm in my late 20's so obviously I'm not expecting some fast paced action flick and cheesy tacky drama BUT my only issue is the pace of this film. The story being told, the deception, the realization in the end were good parts but the pacing is too slow.
