During the beer hall speeches they show young Hitler's audience clapping.They would have knockes on the tables instead.

As far as whether they would have clapped back in the 20s through 40s, I don't know, but your claim that they don't clap is false. I've seen Germans clap way more often than I've seen them knock on tables. I've never lived in Germany, but I lived in Switzerland with some Germans and visited Germany and Austria a number of times. Also, keep in mind that this production is aimed at your average American viewer. They aren't going to know that Germans knock on tables.
