Superb, Simple and Wrenching
I think what makes this film so excellent is its total lack of pretension, fancy techniques or sentimentality. You really did see the essence of the battles and the courage of these young men without any manipulation. The curious townspeople; the deaths... all fully realistic. I read that the Nazis felt they were racially closer to the Scandinavians so there was none of the wholesale slaughter that characterized their invasions of the "bloodlands" of Poland, Belarus and Ukraine. The Second Lieutenant's acting was particularly moving and accessible to me as a viewer. What a situation to be in! I really hope this film gets the recognition it deserves.
