Main problem with this movie

Usually small "cabin in the woods" stories with a few protagonists and an interesting concept are a way for indie directors to showcase their skills and for up and coming actors to shine. This

...movie should have cut the amount of time it spent focusing on "family dynamics" in half and used it to actually make some horror movie. A sub 80 min horror with no horror at all for the first 3/4 of the film. And all the shouting got so annoying I wanted to stab myself in the throat. The crazy brother was the only interesting character. All the sister did was scream. The sane brother was so dull I had no
investment in whether he lived or died

I fully agree with you. Far too much focus on the family problems and less of the horror itself. The shouting and arguing drove me mad. Hated this movie.

The sane brother was a complete a-hole. No surprise to find out mid-way he was a shrink! And those 70's era sideburns? Dreadful.

The only one I liked was Lyla (yeah she did start screaming but for good reason). The crazy brother was good too so the shrink brother just ruined it for me. I was waiting for the crazy one to either shoot him or punch him out.

It's a bit like the director didn't know what type of movie he wanted to make. As you mentioned, too much time was spent on the family dynamics and the brother potentially being a lunatic or telling the truth. As the movie was so short, the time spent on the actual creature was way too short. Either make a movie about family dynamics, or make sure that at the very least 50% of the movie is spent on whether the guy is a lunatic or not and 50% on what's in the basement. If they removed 15 minutes of the first 3/4, told the actress who played the sister to not scream constantly and the crazy brother to be less crazy, this could have been a great indie horror movie.

I wondered if I would come here and see anything about the incessant screaming-it was so over the top and I just wanted to slap her. Otherwise I liked the characters-they all had their individual forms of messed up.
I thought they did a good job with the creature. Still unsure though-was it a gov't thing? An alien thing?

Coffeeluv,

"It wasn't a government experiment." From Smith, the man in the tench coat and hat that shot and killed the sister and the brother.

The screaming didn't bother me. She was scared. 

is it to late to get my 1hr and 15min back?

reply

No the MAIN problem with this movie is that they spend and hour trying to convince you the guy in the cabin is crazy but we all know (except for the two main actors) that he isnt.

we all know there is an alien in the basement

If we are 5 steps ahead of the main protagonists it's not really fun, is it?

reply

In the first 5 minutes, they tell us that there's something malevolent that the brother came across. Then they argue about that for the next 40 or so minutes. The opening sequence gives away what's going to happen in the film.

reply

Yeah, an alien ...wearing a Egyptian mummy suit? Maybe they fly around in pyramids.

reply

Why "indie"?

Where is this coming from?

oh dear i am really struggling with this film. i found it to be a bit of a cacophony of noise what with the overbearing soundtrack and the constant shouting - at times i struggled to understand what they were saying, i did not care for the camera work either - to many contorted angle shots and flashes of scenes which i guess were meant to convey tension and disorientation but i just found it tiresome.

then there were the plot contrivances, like martin sabotaging the car, like neither of the siblings having a mobile phone, the lights conveniently shorting out, no neighbours at home, the gun conveniently running out of bullets.

why would the government send a lone agent into such a hazardous situation?

no; this film was rubbish - no tension, no horror, no interest.
