I feel really split on this film

I came out feeling just really meh about it, but after thinking a bit, I've warmed up a tad bit to it. The main problem with the film is that there is some really great stuff in it and goes into some really ballsy territory, yet it's execution is so messy that it holds the film back from being good.

I thought the ending was rather sloppy and messy and somewhat anti-climactic.

Honestly, if the main character had been someone who was just introverted or socially awkward, and therefore way too eager for approval from the cool high school buddy, it would have been a pretty good film. The basic story there is solid. Unfortunately they went with Jack Black being his usual obnoxious self instead. And marketed it as a comedy, which it very definitely is not.

reply

I kind of like that it is somebody obnoxious who has this happen to him. Black's character sounds like my ex-brother in law, actually. Writing the character as somebody nebbishy or shy sounds boring to me, both because it's been done before, and it seems predictable. Just my opinion, of course!

I have to agree. I feel like having him be so unlikeable gives a darkly comedic tone to everything that happens to him. Since he's so unlikeable, you don't necessarily feel bad for anything that happens because of his being so unlikeable.

I do feel the ending was a little anti-climactic though, but I'm not sure where else this story could have gone.

reply

I agree, I didn't particularly care for it (I gave it a 4/10), but I still find myself thinking about how odd it was. I really liked the last 30 minutes but the rest was boring and unfunny.

reply

It was an awkward story, and one that would have been difficult to get right. Great job, I thought.

I choose to believe what I was programmed to believe

It's one of those movies that was not good, but it was interesting so not terrible either.

There was a good movie here somewhere, but it failed to totally execute.

6/10

I like that it wasn't the normal everyday stereotyped predictable Hollywood pablum.

So many movies are written by committee to appeal to everybody, and they are boring and just like everything else.

New is interesting.
