Why Did They Have Sex?

Anyone know?

reply

Because L.A man, L.A

reply

Because this is a horrible, horrible movie.

reply

Because cocaine is a hell of a drug.

That's a very good question. All the drinking and drugs were a contributing factor, but weren't the reason why they did. For Dan (Black's character) there was a lot of idol worship going on. Oliver (Marsden) was just an opportunist. They were both sloppy sad sluts though. Dan especially can't blame it on any of the consumable substances. He was so singularly focused on being the high-school reunion hero by bagging and dragging his trophy back home that, if you noticed, there was a split-second decision on his part which sent him from reluctance to full-blown/all-in (sorry for the puns) whenever Oliver said, "I'm coming to the reunion". That sent Dan over the top, ah in this case under the sheets.

Well said truetexian.

I'd never *beep* my idol in the *beep*

It's a bit more than that. Dan idolized Oliver because Oliver represented who he wanted to be and because of that he wrapped his sense of self worth in being liked by Oliver. Acquiescing to Oliver's advances was both the thing that Dan thought he had to do to maintain Oliver's friendship and the way in which he boosted his self esteem. Meaning, part of him felt that he had to have sex with Oliver and part of him wanted to because it felt good to feel wanted by Oliver.

For Oliver, it was not just a moment of opportunity. It was, like with Dan, about boosting his sense of self. You see that later in the film when he confesses to Dan that he thinks his life is terrible and thus it felt good to have someone like Dan around who idolized him. They were both broken people, with poor self images of themselves, who liked seeing themselves through the eyes of the other person. It led them a situation that neither would normally be in. One might be inclined to paint Oliver as a man whore who will sleep with anyone, but I would disagree. Although we were never shown what his normal preference in men was, based on the situation and how obsessed he was with looks I doubt he would have slept with someone like Dan had it not been for the ego boost that he provided.

Xaeden, couldn't agree more

Paint this mess as a drama and you'd get more traction.

Because, although we watch Hollywood movies to be entertained, underneath it all is weird *beep* *beep* and the reality slips into movies. Is this a comedy or a drama about Jack Black regretting being the woman? I'll never know and knowing is half the battle.

You're probably better off sticking with movies like, "Transformers IV"...movies that fit into a clear category and don't require you to think. There's nothing wrong with that, in fact, most movies are targeted at your particular demographic-you are a 14 year old boy, right?

This is a tired, tired response to those who don't like, or get, a film. As someone who not only loves movies of any kind, and who in fact was a screener for 3 big film festivals (giving reports on films that get submitted so the programming team can cull for the best), as well as volunteering at Sundance for many years (where this amazingly was in the Dramatic Competition, a select group of films that signal to the film community that this could be one of the best indie films of the year)....this didn't seem to work too well.

Part of the reason I hate to say was that Jack Black was directed to be a bit of his famous comedic/annoying self, and had he been directed/written as more of an everyman (like he was in the great "Bernie") this would have been much more successful as a film and possibly at the box office. The trivia says Bill Hader was originally chosen for the film....I think he would've made a far better choice for the character. Though he is funny as hell on SNL and other films, if you see him in "The Skeleton Twins" you can see he'd probably have brought a bit more depth to the character. Too much of Jack Black's comedic persona luggage from other films filtered in here, and though his breakdown at the alumni party and with his family was goood, it was too little too late.

And movies that have a title that only comes clear in the LAST SCENE....well, any surprise why the public said "The D Train"? A movie about NYC's subway line? Oh....it isn't? Um, what else is playing in town?"

They were all F-ed up and S happened.

Jack Black was a repressed homosexual I believe. Marsden was just down for whatever.

The movie gave you much more interesting character psychology to chew on than you typically get with comedies.
