Should be required viewing for every American:

The episode about MLMs finally convinced me that 'Last Week Tonight with John Oliver' should be mandatory for every American. Even people who hate Oliver's guts will get smarter just by watching 30 minutes of his show once a week.

I don't think everyone wants to get smarter...

But yes - one of the best shows on television right now.

Yeah, you're right. Who needs actual knowledge or actual journalism when all that matters is who yells the loudest. The truth is with whoever wins. Science and history books are for pûssies.

Only if you have the ability to be objective.

Only if you have the ability to be objective.

But that is true for any kind of satire or news format.

The fact that people were actually shocked by that episode goes to the show just how ignorant people are. The scam has been known for decades and the government has gone after several of these firms. Still, as he said, these are nothing but pyramid schemes, so why they're allowed at all says a lot about how corrupt government is. Bill Ackerman has been attacking Herbal-Life for years, yet people continue to ignore him.

On a side note, it would be absolutely classic if Trump went after MLMs and crushed them once and for all. Oliver's head might explode.

I'm pretty sure his head already exploded last Tuesday. 

On a more serious note, you're right; those pyramid schemes used to be known as scams because the media used to cover such stories. Part of why people are - as you claim - so ignorant is because news networks have downsized their investigative journalism branches to the point of extinction: and that ist true for all major news networks. We don't get that kind of coverage and those kinds of stories anymore. We get "infotainment"; a mix of violent stories and celebrity scandals and trivia. Media formats where average Joes who don't read news papers (in either print or online) could actually get - reliable - information (NOT conspiracy theories) are dying out.

As for Trump going after them, well, anyone who didn't vote for him out of pure anger at the establishment but actually thought this guy would try to benefit anyone but himself and his cronies: they're likely in for a similarly sobering experience as they were with George W.

You can tell a lot about what kind of person someone is - regardless of what that person says - by looking at the life the person has lived. Trump is 70 years old. Look at the life he's lived and tell me if you find anything there that makes him come across as person who cares about the problems of the little man. The billionaire who doesn't pay taxes for 20 years. The guy whose life's creed is "You either know how to win or you're a loser". That dude is and always has been a high risk gambler and a playboy with a planet sized ego. He's the real estate speculant version of a pop star (with the sole difference to most pop stars that he already grew up a millionaire).

IDK about that. He does a great job dont get me wrong but is highly opinionated and the topics are slanted or not shown fully at times.

Very true. But you won't find impartial political comedy/satire anywhere on TV (well, except maybe for South Park). Heck, you won't even find objective news anywhere on TV anymore. And Oliver's 30 minutes show is not just highly entertaining (which is why even people who don't agree with him watch it) it is also packed with often compelling information, and while said information is presented in a very opinionated manner, the information itself is correct. We learn more about our country's REAL issues in 30 minutes of 'Last Week Tonight' than in a month watching CNN, NBC or Fox News.

The MLM segment was very cringe to me. Really John? MLM's are just pyramid schemes? What other shocking news are you going to tell me? Water is wet? The sky is blue?

reply

Unfortunately people are ignorant to the history of MLM's and what they are. Most will adamantly disagree that MLM's they work with are pyramid schemes.

Because some of them require you to carry inventory, many people have gotten into huge amounts of debt because of them, in hopes to become those top earners.

People involved with MLMs are suckers, sure, but making a half hour video yelling that they're idiots isn't going to cause them to realize the error of their ways. This whole video was basically Oliver yelling to people who already agree with him.

Of course not. People are such delicate flowers that unless something is explained in the most delicate way possible they shut down. But it's important that the right people get it, the ones who can actually make a change because of it.

Forgive me, but isn't "mandatory viewing" only a feature of totalitarian despot regimes?
