Do Oliver, Bee, Maher, Maddow, et al. realize that...

...they bear a great deal of responsibility for Clinton's loss? Their relentless, nasty belittling of Trump and his supporters helped turn the tide in Trump's favor. They cast him as even more of an underdog than he already was, as someone who was ridiculous and had no chance of winning. They were bullies of the highest order, not even realizing how their merciless hammering away at Trump and his supporters made them come off as worse than their intended target. Even if those like Maher admitted that Trump would get a decent amount of votes, you know in the back of their minds they were like "nah, not gonna happen".

And trotting out celebrities like Beyonce, Katy Perry, Amy Schumer...really? The Clinton campaign actually believed that this would help? Good lord, how clueless can a political party be?

Bottom line is, Clinton ran a terrible campaign, and the media helped her do it, by making their battle cry "Aw come on, you just CAN'T vote for him, he sucks!" and by ignoring a huge section of their core constituency. The Democrats, their candidate, their celebrity endorsers, and the left-wing media all joined together to try to tell the country that they just HAD to vote for Clinton, because if they didn't they were morons, losers, deplorables, and whatever other nasty epithets they could think of. And roughly half the populace flipped a big "SCREW YOU" in return.

reply

Not only did they assist the loss, but their own credibility vanished as well. They crossed the line into just being hatchet men, and are actually worse IMHO than those on the right who do that because they fail to own up to it. I attended Oberlin, I live in Portland, and I can tell that there are a lot of true blue liberals who are PO'd at how they were lied to by the media in just about everything in this election. For a lot of them, it is no longer an issue of media bias against the right, it is media bias against the left in the form of voter misinformation. I have had a lot of people come up to me in the last week and openly admit that they thought I was nuts when I told them that it was going to be really close and 50/50 that Trump would win. They were all toeing the party line that it would be Hillary by at least 8%. That type of disinformation serves to make Trump supporters stay home because they believe their vote doesn't matter, but it can also backfire and make Hillary supporters stay home because they believe they have it in the bag. Bottom line, no one wins when the lying starts, and even the liberals don't want to be lied to anymore. The fake news has now joined the real news in being unreliable.

Sluggr-3,

I saw a news report on TV that said Hillary the day before the election on her plane was already drinking champagne and signing autographs as, "Madam President." You really don't do that sh!t. That's like the Cleveland Indians celebrating their World Series win before they played the game.

Nice twisting of the facts. What she did was autograph an early edition of Newsweek with a "Madam President" headline that someone gave to her to sign. I have not seen anything saying that she signed an autograph as "Madam President."

Newsweek are the tools who put out a current equivalent of "Dewey Defeats Truman." Call them idiots. Maybe you think that Hillary should've shown better judgment and not signed the magazine. But please don't twist it around to have her signing autographs as "Madam President." The situation is mock-worthy enough as it is without taking it the extra mile that you did.

reply

justwrite3,

This response from you here is kind of ironic. Because I just responded to your other post to me on this board where I was talking about this very thing. All my point was there was throughout the campaign the media, Democrats, and the left constantly took mock-worthy moments of Trump the extra mile and twisted them around. You clearly missed my point there and did not even know what commercial I was referring to. Now here you basically repeat my point. Thank you.

I only saw the story one time on the TV news very quickly about some plane trip she took before the election and I know the story said her and others were drinking champagne and she signed something Madam President. Sorry, I guess I didn't get the detail she didn't write Madam President herself but rather signed her name under something that said it. I think you are splitting hairs bro. Either way it is still being cocky and jinxing yourself. That is why hockey players don't touch the Prince of Wales Trophy or celebrate winning the conference.

reply

No, I don't consider this splitting hairs. As with the other post, please provide a link that documents her "drinking champagne" and presumptively celebrating prior to the election. I would be shocked if it is anything like what you characterize. The Clinton campaign knew the race had tightened, and they knew that battleground states were no sure lock. They may have been confident, but I seriously doubt they were arrogantly cocky as you describe.

Here's what you said:

I saw a news report on TV that said Hillary the day before the election on her plane was already drinking champagne and signing autographs as, "Madam President." You really don't do that sh!t. That's like the Cleveland Indians celebrating their World Series win before they played the game.

Again, I did more than a casual search, and the only thing I found is what I described -- her signing the presumptive Newsweek issue. That is nowhere near what you describe.

reply

justwrite3,

Signing something Madam President or signing something that already says it is splitting hairs.

I saw the report about this on TV. A lot of times they then do not post those stories online. I'm not going to waste my time trying to properly inform someone a week after the election. Plus, you are so "with her" it wont matter what I post. But for your information I mostly watch CNN and ABC News so it was probably on one of those. Why would I make this up? The election is over and who cares at this point. Except you I guess. You are going off half cocked and already have formed opinions and have not even seen what I am talking about. It seems like you cannot get over this election and are trying to re litigate issues A WEEK after the election.

reply

Signing something Madam President or signing something that already says it is splitting hairs.

Nope. You said she was drinking champagne and signing "Madam President" the day before the election, arrogantly celebrating as if she'd already won, and now you're trying to walk it back and say signing an issue of Newsweek is basically the same thing.

You complained in the "Last Show of 2016" thread about the media and Trump's opponents taking what he said out of context and twisting it around until it was basically lying, yet that's the same thing you're doing, except you also get facts wrong.

This is how you explain away all the reasons that Trump is unfit to be president -- change the facts this way, rewrite the narrative that way, and poof, he ain't so bad.

Sorry, but I'm a facts-based citizen. Facts matter.

reply

justwrite3,

You are NOT a facts based citizen. Everything I have mentioned you are clueless about. These new (to you) pieces of information just a tiny bit challenge your side so you completely take offense, basically claim I am making it all up, and prejudge without even knowing or seeing what I am talking about. And kill the messenger, me, while you are at it. Ya, real facts based there pal.

I am not walking anything back. If anything I am doubling down. I also am not saying anything but simply relaying what a mainstream and probably liberal news source REPORTED! Yes, the ABC News or CNN story I saw basically said they were arrogantly celebrating. Just own what your candidate did. Get over it. It is not that big of a deal anyway.

I like how you have also read into a bunch of stuff I have posted to find things that are not even there and even put word in my mouth I never said. I never explained away ALL the reasons that Trump is unfit. Never even tried to explain away one. You are totally assuming I am even a Trump supporter. You know that makes you an a55.

You know the election ended over week ago? Why are you still trying to litigate issues that happened before it? Waste of time.

reply

You know the election ended over week ago? Why are you still trying to litigate issues that happened before it? Waste of time.

First off, you started this thread only two days ago. Responding to a thread over the course of a couple of days is hardly a long time.

Plus, it's not like the election is a football game from last Sunday where once it's over, it's over, and we can move on to the next game. We've got four years of Trump attempting to run the country because of what happened last week.

Many people like myself are shocked by this election and still can't completely fathom how such an unqualified buffoon was elected. After the election, this board was been dominated by people trolling the anti-Trump side, and there was virtually no pushback. After a few days, I decided to fight back, and I'm fighting back with facts.

Is the point about Hillary signing the "Madame President" issue or the ad mocking Kovaleski that big of a deal? No. But they're emblematic of how Trump and his supporters operate, ignoring facts, getting facts wrong, twisting the story, denying responsibility for getting facts wrong, claiming that not having the facts right isn't that big of a deal, and really the other side are the bad guys for bringing it all up.

You may not believe this, but it's nothing personal against you. It's unfortunate that you were the one who wrote both the autistic boy post and the "Madame President" post, and I didn't even realize it was the same person until later. It's not about you. It's about Trump, his lying, his disregard for facts, and how that trickles down to the arguments used to rationalize his behavior. That's what I find unacceptable and worthy of speaking up against in these posts.

Holy crap bro, you must have no life. Really, you are fighting back? I am trying not to laugh. This is a dumb movie message board. Honestly, after reading this I now know I should just not respond to you anymore.

I am not trolling either but for some reason you have zeroed in on me and the only person you are "fighting" is me. I originally started a thread about JOHN OLIVER'S LAST SHOW and how I expected more. I never trolled the anti-Trump side. Then I made a small comment about a TV news report I saw about Hillary and you want to split hairs about it so you can call me wrong and I guess a troll now?

"First off, you started this thread only two days ago."

I didn't start this thread, Gothish, did. I started the other one about Oliver's last show.

"Plus, it's not like the election is a football game from last Sunday where once it's over, it's over, and we can move on to the next game. We've got four years of Trump attempting to run the country because of what happened last week."

Ah, it is over. Yes, Trump will be the President four the next four years. What do you hope to change or accomplish buy "fighting back" on the John Oliver IMDb message board? This makes no sense.

"Is the point about Hillary signing the "Madame President" issue or the ad mocking Kovaleski that big of a deal? No. But they're emblematic of how Trump and his supporters operate, ignoring facts, getting facts wrong, twisting the story, denying responsibility for getting facts wrong, claiming that not having the facts right isn't that big of a deal, and really the other side are the bad guys for bringing it all up."

I hope you realize that both sides are guilty of this. When it suits either side facts are ignored, things gets twisted, etc. Or do you bleed blue so much that you think that the Democrats never do anything wrong and the Republicans are all evil? Find the Bill Maher episode with Neil deGrasse Tyson where Bill tries to basically say the Dems are all about science and facts and Tyson shuts him up when he asks if he would like him to point out all the things the Dems ignore facts and science about. It's a pretty funny exchange.

"You may not believe this, but it's nothing personal against you. Ya, but you are only attacking me and no one else. And I am not rationalizing Trump's behavior. Where am I doing that? The one comment I made was about Hillary, not Trump. And the autistic boy commercial wasn't really about Trump but how I thought the commercial could mislead people. I also thought that commercial was unnecessary and better ones were just about what Trump actually did, mocking the reporter. My whole point had nothing to do with defending Trump. It was a critique of the media. All the media had to do with Trump was let the tape roll and he would hang himself. There were definitely times where the news would go back and exaggerate, twist, out of context, etc. things he said. I know you are very biased and can't see this but it did happen. All I am saying is this would always make me wonder why the media did this because they did not even have to. Which reminded me of the "autistic boy ad." I thought that commercial was unnecessary and they should have just done a commercial about him mocking the reporter. Which they did and I thought it was way better.

"Many people like myself are shocked by this election and still can't completely fathom how such an unqualified buffoon was elected."

I guess this is why you are coming after me on here. How are you shocked? You must be one of these far left liberals who lives in a bubble. And yes, even the stupid right lives in a bubble. I don't know, I told many of my friends and family months ago that I expect this election to be close and that Trump could easily win. It might sound weird but these were the few signs I noticed that made me think Trump was going to win:

First, the massive crowds Trump drew at rallies. The news for some reason kept dismissing this. They would say things like well that doesn't mean these people are going to vote. Really? Personally, I would go vote for someone way before I would even consider going to one of their rallies.

Second, an overall backlash in the country over left movements like Black Lives Matter, feminist groups, political correctness, etc. I saw some things were people quickly got tired of all the white people hate and man hating. Bill Maher spoke to this on his last show. "What do you want me to do, check my privilege and cut off my d!ck?"

Third, the new Ghostbusters movie being a massive flop. This movie basically turned out to be a feminist propaganda film. People voted with their wallets and it flopped.

Fourth, Birth of a Nation flopping. Everything I have read said this is a black propaganda film. And nobody saw it.

Fifth, NFL ratings are way down. Some experts think it is because of the whole Colin Kaepernick thing and that people are not watching because of this. I personally know a few people who are not watching because of this.

I noticed a pattern here of liberal things getting rejected by a lot of people in this country a few months before the election and I just thought that the pendulum might have swung to far left and now it is going to swing back. Kind of just like in 2008 it swung too far right and people rejected The W and the right and voted for Obama. And Obama drew massive crowds then too. I was not shocked in the slightest. I don't think any of my friends or family were shocked either. Many of us voted for Hillary too. But we knew she could easily lose.

I think you might be wasting your time. This board was pretty dead I noticed. Now with the show being off until next year sometime no one will post here.

Keep this in mind too. Trump and his family up until he ran were a bunch of rich liberal New Yorkers. I'm pretty sure he was pro choice and for single payer health care, etc. prior to this election. I think he might actually pull out some left supported ideas and try to put those through. I will be shocked if he doesn't.

MGurlea, nice move bro!

"I don't believe your claims. Do you have any evidence to support it?"
"No. I don't need any. It doesn't matter if I show you evidence or not, you won't believe me anyway!"

What a genius way to avoid ever having to back up your bu11sh't!

reply

throwaway50000,

Nice move replying to a thread that is months old. Did you hope I wouldn't see it and you could get in your little jabs with no response back? I have seen this move before.

You said,

""I don't believe your claims. Do you have any evidence to support it?"
"No. I don't need any. It doesn't matter if I show you evidence or not, you won't believe me anyway!""

What you don't know (but you obviously think you do and think you are so much smarter than everyone else) is this back and forth between myself and the other member was spread over two different threads and was rather lengthy and went on for days. He claimed he was so smart and informed and knew all the facts. However, he had never seen a certain political commercial and he also missed an ABC World News Tonight report that I was both referring to. And right off the bat he didn't believe me and said I was making everything up. He said he makes his decisions on based on facts but in this conversation he had already made up his mind (because he is clearly biased for a certain candidate and anything that may even just slightly be negative toward HIS candidate he couldn't stand) and he did not even know about the two things I was talking about. I told him where he could go find the things. He then claimed he couldn't find anything and that he did an exhaustive search for a long time. I then took two seconds and found a video and gave him the link. Some exhaustive search he did. He then still didn't want to believe me.

Plus, why do I have to provide links to evidence of something that has been widely reported on the national news? All that tells me is the person I am talking to is not well informed and probably should be watching the news and not on here arguing with someone about a news story they have NOT seen.

So no, I did provide him with sh!t. You shouldn't make snarky and snide posts months later and not know all the facts after only reading a couple of posts out of many more.

P.S. I have also talked to this member before on this very show's board over the years and every time I then provided links he stopped responding and then another member would come to his defense and the account would be rather suspect of being a sockpuppet.

reply

Jeez, don't be dumb. What would be the point of replying to a post if the author of that post never sees it? Is that something you actually do? That's really weird man. I can't see how that could possibly be any fun. I didn't look at the date. So what.

What I know and don't know about your other thread is irrelevant. YOU made a (seemingly) *beep* claim - one that I've never heard of either. OK, that's fine. One can't be expected to be aware of every single piece of news out there. Just cuz it sounds like *beep* doesn't mean it is. So he asked you to provide some evidence. A link.

Your only defense (completely invalid, btw) is that "it's all over the news, how can you not know about this??"

If that were true, if it's "all over the news" and it's something that "everyone knows about" then you should be able to find thousands of links in LITERALLY 10 seconds. You would have accomplished so much more in those 10 seconds than you did in the several dozen minutes you spent writing up all those lines instead.

You make a claim, the onus is on you to provide evidence to support it. If someone says, "the bible advocates murdering children" and someone says "wtf? no, that's bull", you think an appropriate response to that is, "go read the bible and you'll see!" Why do you think it's reasonable for the other party to spend THEIR time verifying YOUR crap? Are you 5? Cuz you sure seem to debate like you are.

I saw a news report on TV that said Hillary the day before the election on her plane was already drinking champagne and signing autographs as, "Madam President." You really don't do that sh!t. That's like the Cleveland Indians celebrating their World Series win before they played the game.

How can a living, breathing, human not understand the difference between someone signing "Madam President" vs signing her actual name on a magazine cover that has the headline "Madam President"?

Come on man. You have to be trolling with all this ridiculous sh!t. No one is that stupid.

reply

throwaway50000,

"What I know and don't know about your other thread is irrelevant."

This says everything right here. It is not irrelevant. You only know a small part of a conversation and then are trying to make judgements based on only that. I hope you know how wrong and bad that is?

Yes, I have seen multiple people respond after threads are dead like this one. It is some weird trolling tactic. I don't totally understand it either. They will be nasty posts that dredge up stuff that has already been addressed and proven wrong too but they will try to repost about it.

Just because you don't know about something does mean I'm wrong. I feel like you are trying to blame me for you being uniformed.

Plus, I am not going to relitigate this thread now with you that is months and months old.

I was disappointed in Oliver for not discussing liberals actions causing Trump supporters to rally around him. But not surprised.

Liberal pundits act like all Trump supporters are white nationalist racists because white males turned out for Trump. This couldn't be further from the truth, although there are definite deplorable Trump supporters.

The left has been calling Republicans racist for decades, but what made this election is different is Black Lives Matter. BLM rioted, caused all white people evil, privileged *beep* and Democrats supported this group while saying anyone who disagrees with BLM are racist.

Is it any wonder that whites turned out for Trump in droves? Especially lower class whites that are struggling economically. White people's lives aren't all sunshinr and lollipops, our lives can suck just as bad as any other races, and it pisses us off by being called privileged all the time.

I voted for Clinton even though i am a moderate conservative, but after all the trash liberals have talked about conservatives the last two decades (see Maher, Stewart, and now Bee) I can see why a lot of conservatives would vote for Trump over Clinton.

You can't call half the population racist, inbred, stupid, hicks, bigots, etc... that liberals and hollywood have portrayed us all, and then act shocked when we don't get behind you. The left doesnt believe in diversity unless that diversity shares their beliefs. They are just as intolerant and ignorant as the Alt right.

reply

davidlboyd,

That is my problem the past two years with the Democratic Party and people who are left is that if you don't agree with them or they don't get their way well then other people, or the country, or the world are just racist, sexist, xenophobic, etc. Pick a label any label and throw it at someone and hope it sticks and hope your problem goes away. Especially, the past two years. It has gotten really bad. It seems like every far left nutcase has come out of the woodwork to push some far left idea (i.e., ALL white people are evil and should die or ALL men are rapists). If you have a different idea or opinion well they think you should have your life ruined, rights taken away, and be sent off to a reeducation camp.

So Democrats will chalk this up to sexism or some other label instead of trying to learn what really happened. Which one reason is people are tired of the left chalking things up to some racist sexist label.

reply

Exactly, all the bullying and intolerance seems to be coming from the left these days. I don't dare order a ham and cheese on white lest someone in line call me a racist.

And they literally still don't get it. The dems are for unrestricted immigration in the hopes that those new grateful immigrants will support and keep them in power forever. The dems also assumed that they would be supported by the unions for ever and ever. But the thing is, all the blue collar union people have been watching their jobs not only be taken out of the country (factories being shut down because they can't meet egregious EPA rules), or they are also being replaced by illegal immigrants at home. When is the last time you saw an American on a building site? That is why the dems lost Ohio this time by a huge margin and will continue to lose Ohio. Only a democrat would think that you can have unrestricted immigration and reduce unemployment at the same time. Seriously, is there some sort of special branch of economics that teaches this illogical nonsense? Anyone surprised by the outcome of this election has clearly never pounded a nail in their life.

If you think the dems are upset now, just wait until things start to get better for those who they've been giving the shaft to for decades. It is like a whole generation of millenials is about to hear the word "no" for the first time. And just wait until they have to start mowing the yard as well.

Well apparently, Bill is blaming Podesta and Hiliary for the loss. There were phone conversations overheard where Bill and Hiliary were yelling at each other before the election. In one instance, he threw his phone of the balcony in Arkansas. He was overheard telling them that they are going to lose this election in October.

Apparently Bill tried to help Hiliary with strategy since he, you now, was actually elected POTUS before, but Hiliary and senior staff shut him out. Hiliary said his tactics were old. Bill argued that she was making a mistake essentially ignoring the Rust Belt and white blue collar workers, but she thought she new better as a former first lady.  It explains why Bill seem to have little to do with the campaign.

Hiliary's problem is that she believed it was "her turn" and never really campaigned like she could lose. While I am not happy that Trump won, I am extremely happy, she lost.

It was karma in action, that she lost the election to herself.

"the world's smartest man poses no more threat to me than does its smartest termite." -Dr. Manhattan

reply

I agree. The way that she acted like it was "her turn" was one of the things that disgusted me the most. Her actions single-handedly made me change my voter registration from democrat to independent.

I agree with the OP and the other comments as well. The news media was by far the most disgusting part of this election, even more than Hillary's corruption, because it's supposed to be their job to report the corruption.

I was totally ashamed to see John Oliver do a hit job on Gary Johnson and Jill Stein, completely omitting Hillary, just to try to steer his liberal audience into not voting third party.

I am still consumed with disgust. It sucks that we can't believe if Trump actually assaulted any women because the media was so dishonest. It sucks that we have to question something like that. It sucks that we have to question whether he's even racist. It sucks watching them continue the same routine even after the election ended.

Perhaps worst of all, it sucks seeing the results of their dishonesty in ordinary people. I am liberal, voted for Bernie and then Jill Stein. Most of my friends are liberal. However, whenever I brought up Hillary's corruption they would get triggered. Whenever I brought up Hillary's rigging the primaries against Bernie they got triggered. Whenever I mentioned voting third party they got triggered. Whenever I mentioned some possible benefit that Donald Trump could provide they got triggered. In their minds if you spoke kindly about ANY candidate other than Hillary Clinton then you were a racist idiot.

A year ago I was making plans to move to Canada if Donald Trump got elected. Now on some level I'm happy that he won. I'm so glad to watch these fools go down with the ship. Yeah, after having the primaries stolen from my candidate, having the supporters of this thief silence me for 6 months, I am glad to watch their fantasy burn.
