Worth watching
BLOOD MOON is not the first western-horror hybrid, and I hope it is not the last because this rare sub-genre makes for interesting viewing. One of the reasons it works is because the 19th century setting, with its more primitive superstitions and less settled civilization makes it ideal to integrate horror.
Other western-horror films preceded BLOON MOON. I can recall:
RAVENOUS (1999)
THE BURROWERS (2011)
to name a few.
Now western-horror is a sub-genre that lends itself primarily to 'entertainment' value, and not some elegant, Oscar-type movie category. If you come away feeling entertained by a western-horror film then it worked, regardless of the carping about low-budgets, acting ability, studio sets, actors' accents, yada yada, and all that from people just seeking something to criticize.
Would I say that BLOOD MOON was a great horror movie? No, I wouldn't. But would I say that it was entertaining? Yes, I do. And would I recommend it for horror film fans seeking a 'different angle'? Absolutely.
So on a traditional Hollywood scale of four stars, I award BLOOD MOON two stars, which traditionally means, 'fair', or, 'worth a look'. I might even be inclined to give it two-and-a-half because I am biased in favor of western-horror hybrids. True, the movie could have been produced a little better but that is minor. It was entertaining enough for me. Maybe younger male viewers might have hoped for more 'skin' from the two, lovely female actresses in the movie but it really wouldn't have been necessary and just simply distracting.
As a direct-to-video movie, it was a good creation.
