How did American civilization descend from 'Inherit the Wind' to this?

I had priests and nuns teaching me how evolution worked. We watched Inherit the Wind in school & laughed at the early 20th century Tennesseans who were so ignorant that they would reject scientific evidence. How does ignorance make a comeback like that? If we're going to reject the 20th century I think the fundamentalist Christians need to give up their cars, computers and anything else invented since 1859.
