People ragging on it because of the unlikable girls

Isn't that the point? They are Connecticut brats who know nothing but wealth and opulence. They have nothing better to do than frolic around a mansion in designer clothes and immerse themselves in their smartphones; their parents are plutocrats who have checked out on being parents. I really don't understand that as an argument for disliking the movie.

If anything, the main low point for the film is that it gets repetitive (and some of the girls' acting at times is wonky, but they're young newcomers and do a good job overall so I can't criticize them that much). Besides that though, I thought this movie was visually fantastic and it had a great last act. Lots of giallo-ish references and really cool compositions. Chloe Sevigny and Timothy Hutton are a treat in anything.

It's not a perfect film, but it's one of the weirder and artsier horror offerings I've seen lately. I really feel like if you're going to criticize it, you should have something else to say besides "the girls are annoying." Yeah, they're 12 year old rich bitches. Of course they're annoying.

I have a very, very hard time considering this a horror film for starters with next to no onscreen kills or violence. Should have been put in the thriller genre.

I completely agree

How was it, working on the movie set? You must be involved with this turd, I see you all over the place.

reply

Lol yeah, right. I liked the movie so I obviously must be a crew member.

Seriously, dude? I mean, everybody has opinions. This is quite literally one of the dumbest things on the internet, and nobody comes to this site for serious movie discussion anymore for this very reason. There are so many people on this site who haven't matured to the point that they realize that their own opinion isn't gospel, that anytime someone dares to like a movie that they don't, they're accused of being involved in the production.

It got old a decade ago. Today, people use it to identify who is worth having a discussion with, and who is not.

Cut the *beep*

^ Pretty much.

I get that this flick isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, but I'm a fan of several people involved in it (Subkoff and Chloë Sevigny), so I'm sure I have a predilection to liking it. I loved the visuals in it and I also think the story was somewhat innovative in terms of taking an old slasher motif and imposing 21st-century kids on it. For an indie horror, it was way better than most.

The girls were annoying, sure, but come on—the fact that they were annoying is part of the point.

It doesn't really matter, because I can provide reasons why I liked the film all day long and people will still be throwing pithy, petty shots on here anyway, because that's apparently all the IMDb is good for anymore.

Well, I don't know anyone involved in the making/producing/marketing of this movie, nor do I have any real "liking" of anyone that's acting in this particular movie, yet I, for one, found it enjoyable and entertaining!

I understand what was likely to have been the inspiration behind the plot of this movie(the 2 twelve-year-old girls who invited a supposed third friend over for a slumber party with the full intention of stabbing her to death for the sake of proving their loyalty to "slenderman").. Thank God the "true story" did not end in death as the young girl survived the brutal stabbing by her 2 supposed BFFs.

I think they a did a good job of taking the basis of that real life horror and turning it into a somewhat similar plotline for this little horror flick!

Was it the greatest? No..Was it anywhere even in the vicinity of being one of the worst horror films of late?..Hell no! What it did for me was quite simply entertain for its hour and a half running time. And honestly thats a helluva a lot more than I can say for the vast majority of horror films these days!

It's ridiculous that every single time a person comes onto this imdb message board and posts a positive comment for a horror movie that has vitriolic haters, they get the same tired ass accusations of their being a paid insider somehow involved with the damn movie!

reply

I agree.

I just went and saw the film for a second time at the IFC Center this afternoon and I actually liked it MORE the second time. I loved the visuals and the killer's mask—very Alice, Sweet Alice-ish. Yeah, the girls' performances are uneven at times, but overall they're pretty good. Sevigny and Hutton are fantastic in it. I really noticed the score the second time as well, and loved the music used in the film. There is a somber violin piece that plays over the end credits that I didn't even notice the first time and really gave the film a downbeat feel. I appreciated Subkoff's vision here and thought it was a neat spin on the slasher genre infused with social commentary and keen visual aesthetics.

The only reason I even bothered clicking on #Horror imdb message board was due to the fact that I watched the movie this past Monday night, and turned around Tuesday afternoon, when I got off work, and watched the movie again, from beginning to end, enjoying it more on my second viewing..and there are VERY FEW modern horror movies that have subsequent viewing value..much less subsequent viewing that takes place in less than a 24 hour period of time.

The movie is good, IMO, and I am one who is continually disappointed with the present day horror movies that somehow make their way to theatrical and/or VOD releases..I question who in the hell is greenlighting all this utter *beep* that we're continually being "blessed" with these days???

#Horror is one of the very, very few horror flicks that I can genuinely say I enjoyed!

Glad I'm not totally alone in this! I had similar feelings. I only go to see horror movies at the theater a small handful of times a year anymore because the vast majority put out are trash. I thought The Green Inferno was okay, but I found Crimson Peak incredibly dull aside from the visuals. This was at least halfway different and was artistically done; part art film and part slasher flick, so totally up my alley.

I got lucky and was able to see the film at the NYC Horror Festival a couple of weeks ago, and Tara Subkoff was there with the young female cast and they all did a Q&A afterward which was insightful. I think her vision and the general subject matter was intriguing. I like to support indie films, especially if they're ones that I appreciate, so I went and saw it again yesterday at the IFC Center and liked it even more the second go around, and noticed things I hadn't when I first saw it. #Horror and It Follows are probably the best horror movies to come out this year, IMO, but the majority was just blah.

Lucky you!

I have no shame in admitting my envy of your having the opportunity to have seen this at the NYC Horror Fest..and your having gotten to see the Q&A with several of the crew/cast would have been the deliciously sweet icing-on-the-cake!

I'd say it's definitely one of the many perks of living in and/or around the vibrant "Big Apple" of NYC! I suppose that may be totally presumptuous on my part in regards to your living in/around NYC..lol..I'm very much a southern girl who lives below the "Mason-Dixon-line", and have never even had the pleasure of visiting NYC(closest I came to NYC was Boston, Mass)

Much like you, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who found this movie to be a real treat in a variety of ways(many of which you've already mentioned).

Any other newer horror movies that you'd recommend(say in the last few years)? ... I know I've seen alot of the most recent horror films of late, but still I find myself stumbling upon, and/or having other horror genre fans recommend films that I've not yet seen, and some of which I didn't even know exist.

I'm always looking for those hidden gems, especially those special diamonds in the rough! They may be few and far between, but when you find one they really are a treat!

Can I be best friends with jwindter and ultraviolence? ! You guys actually get it. I rarely post on here but I always read the boards. I am a horror fan and I love the innovative nature and how experimental this film was! Not another f ing Saw or Paranormal whatever, this was different! And also, I wanted to add, which I wrote on another note already that despite the terrible reviews and all these people hating it, I decided to watch it anyway and I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed it. I do wish we were told a little bit more about the incident that happened with Cat last year and the back story on Sam because those were two very well developed characters in my humble opinion. I'm so glad to see that it wasn't a complete waste and that at least the both of you were able to appreciate it since it was different. Loved the visuals and the score as well. Look up the song Once Superman by Laurie Anderson. It reminded me of that a little.

Sorry for jumping into the convo, but a lot of people dismiss and dislike what they cannot understand and what illuminates flaws in their own belief system.

This movie is telling the average teen and 20-something that they are "wrong".

We like the movie because we know how messed up that generation is. But the kind of people that bash this movie are the exact people the filmmakers are targeting. It's too bad they are too shallow to see the biting social commentary this movie makes on their lives.

reply

Now that's interesting. I also seem to be in the minority of liking #Horror, thinking it was a cool slow burn type of movie. I did think the Candy Crush-like game thing shouldn't have had as much emphasis as it did, but...

However, I really didn't like It Follows. Probably because I heard such good things about it, I actually expected a good movie. Instead, I was horribly disappointed there.

Haven't seen Green Inferno yet...

Yes- like after they kicked Cat out, then her Dad comes to put the fear of God into the girls... And instead of learning their lesson, they immediately just turn and kick out ANOTHER girl with the EXACT same phrase.

If this is not a practically religious incarnation of the teenage mean girl and her flaws... Nothing is.

And sadly, I don't even think his character was out of line with those spoiled mean brats. Someone has to be a parent.
