"Based on true story"?

Was this actually based on a specific event or just the generalized combination of some more milder incidents with cyberbullying and perhaps the incident where two girls killed their classmate "for slenderman"? I can't find anything so I'm thinking it's the latter.
I really enjoyed this movie...I think you just need to have an open mind. I thought the girls were great because I remember 7th grade very well. No, i'm not in 8th grade, i'm 23. Ha. It was also very aesthetically pleasing, what with the house and the outfits. But anyway, my question above, any answers??

In a later interview with Elle, Subkoff stated that she was inspired to write the film after a discussion she'd had with one of her friends' daughters, who had been cyberbullied.

So, just to be clear, the actual event this was based off of was a discussion with her daughter. 

A friend's daughter, not hers.

never got a feel of what this was supposed to be: a satire of wealthy connecticut wasps and their children? a send-up of self help culture? a portrait of cyberbullying and the predatory nature of elite pre-teen girls? a straight horror movie spoof or a post modern take on horror a la the scream movies? a commentary on the sad state of contemporary art? at least the art that's shown in this movie...the film is missing the thing that's hardest for a lot of first time directors to pull off-a consistent tone. there were parts of the movie that were certainly played for laughs (chloe sevigny's role) but those parts never meshed with the often self serious revelations about the young girls, not to mention timothy hutton's character, or the super stylized horror movie aspects.

one thing i found especially disturbing was the portrayal of the overweight girl-georgie. she continues to be referred to as fat, disgusting, etc pretty much throughout the entire movie. often times while stuffing cupcakes down her throat. who benefits from portraying an extremely young person in such a way? what does that kind of humiliation do for the psyche of a young actress? and isn't this the kind of bullying what the movie is trying (ineptly so) to show in a negative light? honestly, i found it reprehensible on the director's part to include that kind of dialogue directed at someone so young. to make matters worse the character herself or indeed, any other character ever defends or comes to her aid. would it have been so hard for georgie to say something along the lines of, "i can always lose weight, but you'll be *beep* forever."? instead she gets lumped in with the five other girls, united in their shallow hatefulness, and ultimately impossible to care about.

I agree, it is difficult to follow what the tone is supposed to be. I had the same thoughts about the actress who had to play the overweight girl. Sad. Maybe it was supposed to be hard to watch. The whole movie, that is. A look at something that no one has been wanting to look at. I don't have a clear idea of what that subject would be but, I dunno. Just something to think about.

I agree about Georgie's actress and the negative comments directed at her character, the whole time I was watching the movie I was hoping the actress was just a regular girl like the others but wearing a fat suit.

The idea of the movie came up when:

Director Tara Subkoff, conceived the film when she asked a friend's daughter what her idea of horror was. The daughters answer was cyber-bullying.

I did also feel a reference to the Slenderman killings in the news report at the end. In all honesty, horror movies that are "Based on True Events" are always exaggerated to the point that barely any of the plot correlates with what actually occurred; when it comes to horror movies marketed in this way, about 10% of what happened in the movie is real and 90% is fictionalized.
