I really wanted to like this movie...

This was a film that I was actually looking forward to seeing. I'm familiar with The Room all too well. I thought James Franco's performance was great. In fact, I thought the entire cast did a good job. But all in all, I just didn't think the movie was that funny (if that's what it was intended to be). As a comedy, this movie just didn't jive with me. And I must say, there were parts throughout the film that I thought were rather boring. If the goal of this movie was to capture hilarious moments from The Room, I think it failed to do so. The Room alone is funny enough. And on top of that, this movie went by way too quickly in my opinion. I mean, by the time the movie was over, my reaction was like..."huh, that was it?!" I hate to bash the film, but for whatever reason I just didn't find it that enjoyable. Too bad, because I thought this movie was going to be good. I really don't understand all the great reviews it's getting. I was just expecting something more out of it. Pretty disappointing I'd say...

I don’t think the goal of this movie was to be funny, I think it was to do a reasonably accurate adaptation of the book it was based upon. I haven’t read the book, so I can’t comment about that, but I found the movie to be clever, entertaining, well made, and Franko’s portrayal of Wiseau was spot on.

I agree with mudshark - I think the movie was meant to be a tribute to The Room and the phenomenon it turned out to be. One of the reviews I saw called it a love letter to the movie and that sounded about right.

I just want to know more about this Wiseau guy. He's so interesting and mysterious and unique but this movie didn't give enough story about him.

Instead, it keeps on telling me about how the lame movie The Room was made. No, this is called "The Disaster Artist." I want to know about THE ARTIST, not the crap he produced. Wrong title. Really should have been called "The Room: Behind the Scenes," or "The Room: How It's Made."

I like the movie Ed Wood (1994) more. Not focusing too much about the movies he made but more about the person. That one was appropriately titled and more interesting.

"I just want to know more about this Wiseau guy."

"I want to know about THE ARTIST, not the crap he produced."

I think the issue here is that Wiseau loves being secretive about his background. Lots of speculations out there, but hardly any facts. E.g. neither his age nor his real name are known for sure. He confirmed that he's European, but not which country he is from. There is no info about his family, or where the budget for "The Room" came from... It's even addressed in "The Disaster Artist", e.g. when they ask him how old he is, and he says 19 which is obviously a lie. So the movie stayed true to the fact that Wiseau is a bit of a mystery, and thankfully they didn't make up a random background story for him.

Perhaps because you thought it was a spoof film when it actually is a character driven drama?
