It should be european militar and ecclesiastic authorities of the 4th century who first "westernized" the image to fit the current population that the emperor was trying to unify. Western civilization then standardized it. The attempt was not something racial, it was something political. If you want to unify a big population through an idea or an ideological concept, will you use something that looks different to them or similar to them?
If you analyze the main target market of the movie, which is also the target market with the highest purchasing power, investors and executives (who have ROI and bottom line as their priorities) are doing the same thing. They want to appeal to that purchasing power as much as possible by relating to them. Could you judge them for not casting an unknown middle eastern actor in a million dollar movie to portray Jesus?
It's also a clever move given the current convoluted political situation with jihadis bombing the *beep* out of everything they dont agree with. If it was directed toward middle eastern market maybe it could have worked...Additionally, if you want to appeal to the second biggest film market which is China, dont ruffle their feathers and give them more of what they are used to consuming...I guess those chinamen love christian bales of all sorts playing moses........
