He was testing himself to see if he could deal with fear successfully (since he knew what fate was waiting for him in Jerusalem).
I immediately understood that scene when I saw it, because I had a lucid dream a couple of years ago, where my spirit guides put me in meditative position, and then they threw snakes on me. I knew it was a test, to see if I could overcome my fear. I didn't make it.
