Movie was incomprehensible?

I saw so many folks said it was incomprehensible and I wondered what was so incomprehensible about it. I'm Asian, don't speak Chinese but I have watched wuxia movies since I was young. This movie has the typical elements of the wuxia genre but the way the director presented the material is different and I found it very refreshing. Of course I couldn't keep track of all the names but I knew what was going on. Brilliant movie with breathtaking cinematography and hypnotizing score. It's enlightened to watch a wuxia gem that is at least comparable to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. If people want a linear experience I would highly recommend Crouching Tiger 2 on Netflix. It's so dumb and made me felt like I was watching The Hobbit with Chinese people in it...

Agreed - this wasn't difficult to follow. The basic plot is really simple. I'm thinking people aren't conditioned for "shorthand films"; movies like this or THE MASTER that take huge leaps in the narrative and expect you to fill in what happened.

I agree. Major plot points are explained clearly. The only thing I didn't get straight away was the identity of the masked woman that fought Yinniang. Maybe some of the minor characters became a bit hazy to me but the main story was easy enough to follow.

I can't speak for others but I am certainly not lying. I didn't get everything but I definitely did not leave the theater feeling that the story was incomprehensible.

I will check out "The Emperor and The Assassin", thanks for the tip.

But if you like that film, why don't you give it 10 stars as that is the only score you seem to hand out :)

I didn't lie. I didn't know who the masked lady was but I got the gist of what was going on. If u paid attention you could piece all the events together..

If you didn't know who the masked lady was (Lady Tian-Yuan (Tang Ji-an’s principal wife), it's very unlikely you did get the jist of what was going on. So (LOL) if I were you, I wouldn't be telling others to pay attention, when you clearly haven't succeeded in doing that yourself. 🐭

"movie seemed more interested in nice filmography than telling a story"
exactly my thoughts.

People like to be spoon-fed.

People like to not be sh!t upon by arrogant pseudo-filmmakers.

This is so much worse in every way imaginable than most comparable movies, that it shouldn't even have been released.

Then tell me what exactly was going on? It's one of the best looking movies I've ever seen and all that. But there were some politics I didn't understand. I have no idea who the masked woman is. What's with the twin sister (is our main actually the twin sister since Yinniang apparantly nearly died once). What mostly annoyed me here is that there's so little talk yet the movie still seems to rely on it to explain everything that's happening making it pretty hard to figure out what face even belongs to what name. Took me over half the movie to figure out who was hiding her pregnancy and I still don't know why.edit: I actually misunderstood that.

I would highly recommend Crouching Tiger 2

And don't you bloody dare. The movie I watched before this was "ba wang bie ji" (farewell my concubine) which was nearing 3 hours and I think I might've well watched without subtitles to understand what's going on.
