Why was that one chick engulfed in smoke?

Towards the end, somebody attacks some lady and she's engulfed in smoke that appears to be coming out of her body.

Who is she, who attacked her, and how is her body pouring off copious amounts of smoke? Was this some kind of mysterious weapon that was deployed against her?

The old hairy chap cast a spell using the torn paper figure. I thought that was one of the best bits of one of the dullest films I have ever watched. It looked good though.

the woman is Tian's concubine, who is pregnant with his child. his wife ordered the old man to make a smoke potion in order to either kill her or her baby.

tian's wife is also the masked assassin who attempts to kill the main character in the forest.

Ahhh, right. That explains it. I did find this movie really hard to follow.

yep, the movie industry needs more straight-forward, dumbed down movies with gratuitous swordfights !  i'm just joking here. 

Yinniang actually helps the pregnant Concubine Hu whose baby may be a potential rival to Lady Tian Yuan’s sons. Initially Tang Ji-an thinks incorrectly that she is attacking her until she tells him Hu is pregnant. That's why he ends up spitting the dummy at his principal wife. 🐭
