I think Paul did it to ensure an emotional performance. There's a quick shot of him smirking just before she goes on.

I agree that Paul did it. Notice that it was a small amount of glass....not intended to incapacitate, but merely to draw blood. He wanted her to be focused and to overcome the final hurdle.
